I also don't think Spike is an oaf. He seems about the age (to the extent that it's meaningful) of the CM Cs, and he's about equally mature and a little more competent.

I'm not saying we need male main characters; I would just like to see some male colts that aren't Snips and Snails.

Oh, definitely. It doesn't seem like anyone is really a fan of Snips and Snails. The reason they really bother me, though, is just that without them the show would be completely devoid of cartoony caricatures.

Yeah, originally there were going to be, but they got axed because it would have made a ton of work for the staff, and they apparently made the first season on a shoestring budget. Maybe there'll be more variety in season 2.

What they should do is give spike a male friend to be his bro. Something (yes, thing. Dosn't have to be a pony) whos around the same age and maturity level as him.

They could feature prominatly in a future day in the limelight episode for Spike, and just be there for company the rest of the time.

Implies Spike has good memory. Even reminded Twilight that she can copy Rairty's gem finding spell.

Of course, that might be chalked up to Twilight being bright, but forgetful.

So between Spike, Snips and Snails, and the CMC, that suggests it's children who are immature, rather than boys specifically, and it's just that a preponderance of recurring male characters are children.

Thing is, we haven't seen many male characters that are in the same age bracket as the mane cast (except for maybe Big Mac). All the male characters are either young or old. Or Steven Magnet, whatever age he's supposed to be.
