Boys shows should have gilrs also to teach them girls are better.

It's not that, I just think the show would be a lot more effective if it were completely equal about gender competence (with a slight leaning towards female due to the mane cast)

I dislike the idea of tokenism, and this show has a Token Dude.

Mac, Braeburn, wile not a colt Spike is hardly an embarrassment to dudes and... I dunno, the Sheriff Silver Star seemed to be on the up and up. It's basically just Snips and Snails that seem to be the problems.

I still think it's boys' shows moves first.

And everyone is forgetting Mr. Cake and I'm sad now.

Even boys' shows have around a third of their cast be female, and they ain't love interests usually.

Except Transformers, which has about one girl at any given time, human or machine.

If Pony is Trans's counterpart, that'd explain it...

Oaf: a stupid person, a big clumsy slow-witted person. Well he's actually average for his age (if not outright smart, I mean he is Twilight's assistant and shows more sense than Snips and Snails), but still, the difference is very notable. Especially when he tried to offer the baked bads to the cast.

While I'm a big fan of gender equity, shouldn't a show just be able to have the genders that work best for it? You can't throw a stone without hitting a kids' show that's virtually all male characters; what's wrong with just one that's virtually all female characters?

I'm pretty sure taste dissonance doesn't make you slow-witted. Vaguely insensitive, but not oafish.

Myabe people in my enviroment use "oaf" in a different sense. He definitely has sensitivity and self-awareness issues, especially when pitted against Rarity. I mean she's the worst possible match for him. He'd be better off with RD or AJ, who would share his sense of fun, or FS, who would indulge him understandingly and be appreciative of the help (or refuse it outright if she thinks she can't return it).

You know, it really pisses me off, girls who smile at dudes to get them to do heavy lifting tasks for them. And boys who smile at secretaries and stuff to get them to help them more. And I'm one of those boys, and I hate myself everytime I succeed in getting favours with just a big smile and smooth manners.

That last point is the most compelling to me; since Applejack et al are perfectly able to pull heavy machinery, it's odd that it's always men pulling carriages and such.

Spike offered baked bads because he thought they were good. Sort of like how Pinkie ate cupcakes with hot sauce even after Twilight exploded and ran away.

That's fair, Jeweled. I'm not saying we need male main characters; I would just like to see some male colts that aren't Snips and Snails. All things are not equal in terms of portraying the sex divide on TV, especially in kids' cartoons, but it's possible to focus on strong female characters without placing the title of 'most recurring male' on Snips' dubiously hygienic shoulders.

^Exactly. He's younger than the girls by a fair margin (call him 14?), so it makes sense that he's still occasionally forgetful about things like that.

Yeah, Spike is most definitely not an oaf. He can be a bit oblivious, but that's more due to the fact that he's fairly young, and also Rule of Funny.

I don't really care too much about adding more males to the cast, but I'd like the existing males to get more screentime. Add a bit more Big Mac, maybe make Snips and Snails not quite as stupid, give Caramel or Doctor Whoof more lines or something. Maybe one or two more male characters, but you don't need to have as many male characters a female characters. That's just bringing to too many new guys.

He doesn't quite save the day in A Dog and Pony Show, but he does a pretty good job of fighting the Diamond Dogs.

Seriously, those kids playing New Divide were cute as hell... but the vocals are kinda weak...

He didn't exactly save the day, but he was the only one who was right in the final episode of the first season. I still think he should have gone with Pinkie, though. He was also right in the Zecora episode, although he was too busy making up nicknames.

One thing about Snails that I find interesting is that he's so far the only little unicorn that is shown knowing any magic.

I'm guessing that Spike just sulked to the doughnut shop because nobody would pay attention to him. And took his clothes off for some reason.
