Afternoon everyone. I see we're discussing shipping.

The house scene in Hurricane Fluttershy and the "kiss" at part 2 of canterlot wedding (Listen closely when rainbow dash picks up fluttershy)

Kyler: Glee has a bad habit of having its stories not treat its characters with respect. This extends into the romance where a large portion of it is either extremely cringe-worthy, narmy or hammy (there are a few genuine moments of d'aw, but they're pretty rare).

With strong enough Shipping Goggles, it's everywhere.

Allow me to explain something that happened on Glee.

There are two cheerleader characters, Brittany (The Ditz) and Santana (wisecracking bitch). In season one, there's a scene where all the characters are on cellphones, talking about some development (probably in regards to Finn's dating life, I forget). Eventually, this line comes up:

• Santana: "Sex isn't dating."
• Brittany: "If it were then Santana and I would be dating."

Cue funny facial expressions from everyone involved.

One-off gag. Then the shippers all decide to start pairing the two of them together, and you know what? The show runners listened and it became canon. Led to a Brittana storyline, a love triangle involving the wheelchair kid who ended up kinda getting shafted in a development that still leads me to cry "bullshit!", and a storyline about Santana coming out as a lesbian.

So the shippers actually had a direct effect on the direction of the show.

I looked at the Ship Tease examples and some of them seem kind of YMMV to me.

Then there's the shipping wars. Mainly, the Brittana shippers claimed they were under attack by the Brittany/Artie shippers, which is stupid because Brittana was always the Fan Preferred Pairing (I don't think Bartie shippers even existed - the pairing actually showed up on the voting list for Television Without Pity's "Worst TV Couple" slot), and I mentioned earlier how the actors sometimes get angry tweets and text messages from shippers.

It's terrible. Absolutely terrible.

I didn't think the romance stuff in Korra was unbearable, personally. I just shake my head at the fandom.

@Moe Other than the shipping bits, it's a decent show.

Because Korra had such a short season, the shipping felt really rushed. Maybe if they'd had more episodes, the romance would've seemed more natural.

I think it has something to do with living vicariously through the characters or something.

It's an explanation I've heard for the Zutara shipping in the original Avatar - Zuko is the guy that the fangirls wish they could bang. Katara is the character that said fangirls connect with/imprint on. Do the math.

@Ginger I'm not sure. I get the liking romance, but up to attacking other ships? Even if the ship is canon? That I don't get at all.

It's like they care more about their pairings than about the actual show.

And then there's the Harmonians, who loved to write fan fiction about how Ron Weasley was abusive in his relationship with Hermione so that Hermione could be justified in leaving him and hooking up with Harry (incidentally, Ginny would always be portrayed as a slut).

They really seemed to hate the Weasleys.
