I'm not heated, just mildly annoyed. Because people completely misunderstand what my motivation is.

Blue, I understand, and really yours is the best reason I've seen for it, you're actually trying to help, just getting a bit annoyed with others that nitpick tiny little details to the point it makes it seem they are just looking for reasons to dislike something

Actually, trying to work with fanfiction writers is probably a bad idea, I don't read fanfic hardly at all so there are little things that are accepted in fanfiction that aren't accepted elsewhere and little things that would probably just bug me about it.

I should probably just go back to Writers Block again and look for someone who wants a critique done.

Re: fics: I agree with Blue.

By publishing their work on the Internet for other people to read, it opens them up to scrutinization. Enjoyment does often hinge one how well written a story is because, well, writing is the sole way the story is being communicated (with some exceptions, I guess, but even the ones that use pictures rely more on words than the pictures). Just because someone can overlook a little mistake doesn't mean they didn't notice it and have the flow disrupted. Just because the mistake doesn't bother one person, it might bother the next one. I've read a few of the shorter 6 stars (Cross and Arrow and My Little Dashie) and felt like they would have been a lot more enjoyable if more effort had to be put into revisions. Obviously since the fics are rated 6 star, there's far more people out there willing to overlook the mistakes than me.

not just you. And yeah fanfiction is pretty much just about the fun of sharing your story, not the little tiny details needed to make money off of it. i'm sure some will want help, but most, just want to have fun writing.

and yeah, far as i concerned all the matters is if the story was good, I barely ever notice little things like that.

as to revisions, well it might work for one shots, then you have things like FOE or CEQ that are made chaoter by chapter, so the author can't revise the earlier stuff and it can create issues as the author grows better at writing of the earlier chapters not fitting in as good.

@Blue I've started doing that all the time. TV Tropes needs to start using BBCode.

Fanfiction has a big disadvantage because it's expected to be written serially. A professional writer usually writes the whole draft first, then edits the entire thing several times before showing it to an editor, who then points out even more things that need to be rewritten, so by the time it's published it's been redone four or five times, resulting in MUCH higher quality.

Of course serial writing has some big advantages as well. You get constant feedback (well, you do if you have readers) and motivation to keep writing.

I do wonder how well received it would be if someone were to write a big epic story like CRISIS or FOE, rewrite and edit it several times, then post it online all at once, fully complete. It would definitely be something people would talk about, I think.

I don't really remember it but I'm pretty sure it had something to do with trying to remember which Crow was which.

My thread dreams are basically I post something stupid, feel really embarrassed and then realise that I'm dreaming so it's okay. Speaking of dreaming, I'm off to sleep. Good night.

@ Blue, exactly, look at CEQ the writer has clearly been taking feedback into account for some of the later chapters and they have been improving greatly.

And there's the issue people holding serialized fanfiction up to the standards of a story that has the ability to be drafted, rewritten, edited, rewritten again, etc... Flaws Inherent To The Medium

nope nope me either, totaly don't have three Mc Donald's ponies and a few bind bags on my desk.

Seraphem: Yea, they can get stuck if it's a larger problem with material that is (or even just might be) used later in continuity, but the little things do help and many of them (like awkward word choice, bad sentence structure, minor pacing issues) can be fixed without screwing up the rest of the story.

And yes, rewrites are an option too, but they tend to cause a big stink (I still remember the Past Sins one where some older readers were getting pretty mad).
