I don't really agree with the "we only get the best" notion. Maybe it's because I grew up when anime was first getting a foothold and companies were so desperate for exposure that they would force potential licensors to pick up crap nobody wanted, but I've had to sit though complete travesties like Big Wars, Macross II: Lovers Again, Transformers the Headmasters, Vision of Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War, Birth, and Legend of Crystania, while seeing absolutely awesome and utterly deserving anime like Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, Aura Battler Dunbine, Saint Seiya, Sailor Stars and the original Mermaid Scar OVA get the shaft. Also, we don't get everything that was popular: where's the English version of Doraemon? Not to mention how Detective Conan and Lupin the Third got screwed in their western releases.
I noticed when I first got into Anime.. that Anime tended to have way more serious storylines than WA. But this was a good 10-15 years ago and WA has made leaps and bounds in its ability to tell a serious story in a way that is still appropriate for the target audience.
Not really. What happens is WA tends to get one show that stands out compared to its contemporaries and people tend to forget all the other crap that came out around the same time.
Though admittedly, that sounds almost exactly like the "we just get the good/popular anime" argument in reverse.
