I played a little of Final Fantasy XII. The impression I got is that there might've been a neat story in there, but it's loaded down by tons and tons of filler. It's like, "hey, you want this story with political intrigue and stuff? Too bad, time for fetch quests!"

@kegi I think it was because the boss was JUST long enough to the point where it's attacks started to feel repetitive, but if the boss had been shorter then it would've been too easy and wouldn't have felt climactic

@Seraph: Oh, it's a WOW thing? Yeah, I don't pay much attention to MMO's, so I wouldn't know about that.

They've always struck me as being very difficult to design bosses for, considering most have this sort of fire-and-forget style of play. Not that I've played Wow, so I wouldn't know myself.

Right - that's why a lot of boss battles have stages of attacks. It gives you a feeling of progression, gets you some variety, and keeps the battle from getting stagnant. Plus the stages themselves can escalate, leading to a sense of climax when you finally beat the thing.

Overall it sounds like the battle was just suffering fro ma limited budget of time. I mean that doesn't change it for the player, but it at least makes it understandable. For some reason, the endgame in a lot of games gets the shaft when it comes to budget and time issues.

One of my favorite boss fights was Tartrus from halo 2, he only had one atack, but he was very daberous nonetheless

Hm. World of Warcraft. Might consider renewing my subscription. I got The Old Republic recently, and so far it's been... kinda a letdown. I notice the servers aren't particularly populated.

There have been tons of GREAT bosses...but..seriously..i want to know how ANYONE thought MOD was a fitting end of x-pac, have fun doing this same fight for a year till the next X-pac comes out, ultimate showdown of the game, fight.

It fails on nearly every level of basic boss desighn, it is long, but due entirely to repetition (you do the EXACT same phase 4 times in a row and each takes ~ 2 mins.) you never actaully feel like you fighting the BOSS just peices of scennery and little tarsh mobs that spawn once. and the end of it..is him laying there getting beat on when all he has to do is roll his head to one side and we'd all be crushed.

hate to say it but...don't bother yet, wait till Mists comes out, World of Warcraft is DEAD right now, eveyone is burnt out on the horrible mess of Cata and just killing time till Mists.

Also, yeah I know, but this is Blizzard and World of Warcraft, Arthas..the last boss from the last X-Pac was AMAZING, one of the best boss battles ever, in ANYTHING, then we got the boring dreck that is MOD.

or the part right before it where the gaint dragon, ultimate boss, most dnagerous threat ever....just goes pop and tunrs into sparkles?

Besides, game design is an interesting subject of discussion.... MLP, Zelda style, travelling the world to collect te Elements of Harmon, you play Luna and/or Celestia, proving your worth through series of worlds, acquiring many and new magical skills and items, in quest to ultimately defeat Discord.

Sisters of Elune, I'm GL for one of the best raid guilds on the server..well ally ones..that is still in the top ten despite not having completed a raid in over a month thanks to all our A squad people getting sick of the game and burnt out, just trying to hold it together till Mists.

and ok, i'll admit it was an intresting fight, it just FAILED as an end of expansion, this is the FINAL BOSS, and..it just failed to feel at all climactic. or personal.

So, science thing!
