It's hard to see how would a family name a son "filthy rich" when he was born. If he was already rich, so was all the family... it's more understandable if it was a nickname, given by friend or society.

But the worst offender is Diamond Tiara, who is called Diamond Tiara, has a Diamond Tiara, cutie mark and uses a Diamond Tiara. If the name was a nickname that would make more sense.

Filthy Rich WAS born rich

Stinkin' Rich. Now HE wasn't born rich, it was the Zap Apples that gave him his start

@Red: That's your decision. I still find it a lot of fun and philosophically interesting.

EDIT: I know that it's not true, but I still like to think of ponies as having heritable last names. Plus, "rich" has more than one meaning. Stinkin's ancestors could have been chef's or something.

[up][up]Sadly, nothing MLP related. The Spectacular Spider Man has become my latest obsession, and I'm rewatching episodes daily.

On the topic of names, I think that DT's is more of a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy. Her rich parents named her after a prissy, fancy accessory and spoiled her rotten, so her personality and talents developed around that.

Oh look, a missing quotation mark. Those are always fun. And I think the author misplaced a parenthetical clause. Unless I'm mistaken, rather than

I looked up from the book I was reading to pass the time. (Turns out, Equestrian Army Today was all about battle saddles.) The train was slowing to nearly a stop.

It should be

I looked up from the book I was reading to pass the time (turns out, Equestrian Army Today was all about battle saddles) The train was slowing to nearly a stop.

Anyway, looks like we're headed for another action scene. Y'know, something funny I've noticed - the things in chapters 5 and 6 had breaks to allow for a passage of time in the middle of the action scenarios. It's like the story itself finds its action scenes boring and wants to get them over with.

Actually, the parenthetical statements inside of spoken lines are the real travesty of writing that I've seen in that story. They don't come up often enough to really tick me off, but just often enough to completely suck me out of the story.

@Pannic YOU find them boring.

A lot of them I actually liked (mostly the ones involving the Alicorns)

[up] Huh?

[up][up]Parentheses in dialogue? I can sort of get that if it's an aside remark that the character is muttering or an off-hand "gee, that reminds me" thing. The terrible, terrible and mercifully dead story ''My Second Life" was horrendous with using parentheses within dialogue.

[up][up]There are quite a few lines of dialog that have parenthetical statements in them. They just make no sense in spoken dialog. I mean, what is that supposed to imply about how the character is speaking? Is it an aside? Can other characters hear what they're saying? It's just not proper and very confusing.

What's it called when you use "-" in place of brackets?

Cuz that's what I'm noticing in Wheel of Time. Where there'd usually be a parentheses there's a "-" instead

I usually imagine it to be along the lines of "muttering something." Admittedly yeah, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but My Second Life was absolutely awful with them. That story threw in parentheses that weren't actually things the character was saying, but remarks to the audience.

Yeah, they use "em-dashes." They're often used in place of parentheses. I like to think of them as "a break in the train of thought."

@Ginger That simply implies a larger pause than what a comma would imply. Those types of things define the rhythm of a character's speaking. Parentheses have no semantic meaning when it comes to rhythm, as far as I know.
