That's not as uncommon as you'd think. A very common trait of protagonists that make them "special" in their world is their ability to gather people around them and inspire others, without ever actually trying to.

@Lurker but is the protagonist's specialness (with regards to things being easy for them or good things just HAPPENING around them) regularly given a in-universe explanation?

Quite a lot, actually. Sometimes they're The Chosen One. Sometimes they're favored by a god/goddess. Sometimes there's a prophecy being fulfilled. Sometimes they even explicitly have that as a power.

It's actually the one thing I find especially interesting about Wheel of Time

The way the villain apparently has some control over probability as well as the protagonist (though I believe the protagonist's control is involuntary)

Like he can make it so that the heroes will accidentally stumble into one of his spies etc.

To be fair, Cheerilee is never around when she's at her worst, so she wouldn't know about her bullying tendencies, and the one time she does catch DT doing something wrong, she does step in.

Ginger: I'm guessing there's restrictions, otherwise he could just increase the probability of them accidentally walking off a cliff without realizing it, right?

Cheerilee is too passive in general. She only gave the CMC extra homework for getting into full on hooficuffs instead of suspending them or even sending a note home to their families (although I suppose the latter could be handwaved to have happened off screen).

@Kuroi Yeah, the Pattern (which is full of the threads of life) only tolerates minor changes. You can't make too big a change.

@Ginger: It's part of the Theory of Narrative Causality. The same thing happened in Medaka Box (which gets very meta in later chapters) as the one villain said that even though she's far more powerful than Medaka, she wouldn't be ablke to beat her as Medaka's the main character. Then she proved her awesomness by figuring out a way to accomplish her goals without beating her.

Osias: Or maybe they're just like real world given names? That is, you get it from your parents and if it really bugs you, you can legally get it changed (so anypony with something they feel is totally off base can choose something more appropriate).

That's the assumption we run with the RP I'm in, anyway, and it's worked fairly well for covering the plothole (we briefly joked about parents being seers, though

). And well, maybe I'm a bit biased because it's made for a cute major character development point.
