I thought it was initially deception, but it's likelier to be the latter now.

I don't know. If Discord can actually see the future, then you'd think he'd know that this plan would end up failing. So I'm inclined to think it's an illusion

what if Carrot Top is Applejack's next-door neighbor, and all the Ponyville farmers live on/near Sweet Apple Acres, the largest farm in the area?

Maybe there's a feudal system where they live under Lady Applejack on her land.

Sometimes characters can give others visions of the future, but aren't omniscient themselves.

...I swear I've been annoyed about this trait before, but I can't remember where it was.

Also, you'd think that if this were a sign of things to come, then AJ would be trying her darndest NOT to lose her friendship. Despite being mind controlled into lying, I don't think she wants to stop being Twilight's friend, and all of her lies so far have been good intentioned lies that she thinks are protecting her friends.

I can't imagining her willingly going along with the group's disbandment, especially after seeing that vision

An interesting thing about the vision is that except for Twilight, all of them are earth ponies. Of course that could just be an animation error, since at this point it would be redundant for him to take away their horns and wings again.

Her lies do seem to be geared towards not losing their friendship. She lied about who she was talking to because she didn't want Twilight to know about the vision, she lied about Pinkie acting weird, etc.

Well, in the riddle, ("twists and turns are my master plan, then find the elements back where you began"), he did seem to be aware that the ponies will find the elements even after being defeated at the maze. So maybe he does know that he will fail.

Or maybe he doesn't typically bother looking into the future, if he actually can. He is Discord after all, would he really want to know exactly how things are going to play out? He'd probably try to change things even if they're going in his favor just to be contrary.

My guess is that he's going for a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's not necessarily going to happen, but if it does, Applejack will be even less likely to recover.

Maybe Applejack will recognize the breakup when it happens, and through sheer force of will she'll tell them all about the vision, breaking Dirscord's hold over her.

The others will be freed from his influence when they force themselves to act according to their elements again.

A bit obvious, but it might be sweet to watch

^We do know that Dash will likely be the last one to be freed, given the first spoiler image we had - Grey Dash being lasso'd. I can't see a concerted effort to go after Dash being made before the other four girls are freed.
