@Crow: at least Elrond et al are pretty badass when it comes to kicking the tar out of the remnants of Morgoth's army.

How can Habsro use names like "Lyra" in toys with no fear of being sued by whoever named her first on the Internet?

@ Mousa

Actually, that could really funny!

They are not happy one bit... AJ and Twi in particular.

@AHR, Of course it doesn't make it okay, but really, trying out all these costumes styles makes fora fun experiment, and an opportunity to make fun of other's choices in excessive skimpiness.

@Osias, how would they be bale to know, exactly? These names are so widespread and mumbled that an originator is impossible to find, these things are built on consensus, not a sole person, especially when the net is involved.

@Ace Eh, true. Any other monsters that we've seriously altered the perception of? (Not sure about werewolves)

EDIT: Mermaids may fall into this category... (Not sure how much they were originally like sirenstongue)

Werewolves? Terry turned them into dogs behaviorally [lol] complete with aversion to the words "bad" and "bath" [lol]

As for mermaids, they're basically our girlfriends when we go diving in ocean Fictionia.

@Mousa: mmm, but someone could come up with some site or whatever "proving" she/he created the name, no?

They could try, but at this point it's not likely.

@osias: No one copyrighted the name 'Lyra', so they can't sue - they have no legal right to the name, and they'd have to definitively prove that they were the first person ever on the Internet to use the name. If they weren't - like, if some other guy had used the name 'Lyra' a day before and the person suing had no idea - the case against Hasbro could still be thrown out.

Now I'm wondering if goblins have been softened any.

From what I know about dwarfs dwarves, it's hard to tell whether they were softened.

There is young Lyra Silvertongue in His Dark Materials.

[up] Goblins are now the amusingly explosive little men thanks to Warcraft, Warhammer, and Magic: The Gathering.

Dorfs are still hardcore smiths, miners, craftsmen and now warriors, only they also get drunk more often and thanks to Notch they're also more prone to tantrum spirals, fits of artistic madness, and crazy megaprojects done for !Science!

A Lyre is. Lyra is her name based on that.

@Applelight: No, the harp-like instrument that's tattooed onto her ass. =D You're probably thinking of a lute.

Yeah, never played any of those.

EDIT: The only widespread monster that I can think of that hasn't been softened much (besides dwarves) is the living dead.

@Red

You mean she's a blank flank in hiding?surprised

Also goblins got a racial upgrade into orcs/orks, which are everywhere and demand more dakka and choppa.

Zombies are still a threat, but we have much better ways of taking them out now, like flamethrowers, automatic weapons, and chainsaws.

I'm amused by the mental picture of an Earth Pony machinist making themselves a mechanical set of wings and an enchanted gemstone horn and making a sort of mecha-alicorn out of themselves . Magitek!

[down] Dakka is an orkish term referring to the use of loud automatic rapifire firearms. See also More Dakka.

By the way, I'm still not sure what Dakka is (outside of the Hungarian spelling and Japanese romanization of Bangladesh's capital[lol])

...And yes, I got that from a quick Wiktionary search.

I know we have a trope page for it, but I'm still confused...

[up]Thanks...

Pony Stark invents a mechanical battlesuit for earth ponies that gives added strength, wings for flight, and a horn that shoots plasma bolts. This becomes known as the Iron Mare Project.

@Crowlover: Yeah, dakka is an onomatopoeia for rapidfire guns. Like dakka-dakka-dakka.

^I'll admit, I'm warming up to the idea of Earth Pony machinists. =)

Nah, it means 'motorbike'. A lot of Orkish is just corrupted English (well, Gothic, but it's essentially the same).

[up]Wait. Orkish is derived from Gothic?
