I've always assumed it meant something that doesn't have a set corporeal form. Like it's made of energy or something we can't comprehend.

In Fallout Equestria the term Eldritch blade is used quite often to describe daggers that are made of magic

It's quite an abused term because it's oddly-spelled and just sounds cool. I'm ure it should mean something like "really, really strange or unnatural in a surreal way that is exceedingly difficult to describe", or something like that.

Pronunciation

IPA: /ˈɛldrɪtʃ/

Etymology

Middle English from earlier elrich, equivalent to Old English el- (“foreign, strange, uncanny”) (see else ) + rīċe "realm, kingdom" (see rich ); hence “of a strange country, pertaining to the Otherworld”; compare Old English ellende "in a foreign land, exiled" (compare German Elend "penury, distress"), Runic Norse alja-markir "foreigner".

Adjective

eldritch (comparative more eldritch, superlative most eldritch)

1.unearthly, alien, supernatural, weird, spooky, eerie

(I know I got ninja'd, but...)

[up]Otherworldly would work...

Doesn't it say on the Fair Folks page that Eldritch originally meant Elven or Fairies or something?

Well, the etymology for elf turns up something interesting...

From Middle English, from Old English ælf (“incubus, elf”), from Proto-Germanic *albiz.

@Ace

Eeyup

And according to the etymology in the German word for "nightmare, " elves gave nightmares, too. My, how our perception of them has changed...

Look at all these options I have!

@Applelight, yeesh, that's uh... yeesh, those clothes are tiny. And Fluttershy and AJ and Twi would never dress like that.

@crowlover: Well, back in the day the Fair Folk were people you did not want to anger or entice into trolling you for kicks. Along came good ol' Willy Shakespeare, who makes a mockery out of them with A Midsummer Night's Dream, and now they've been reduced like the Hogwarts House-elves, or all angsty like Tolkien's elves. it's nearly as bad as vampires, who've been reduced from a terror of the peasants into angsty sex-gods except for the Scarlet Sisters, good old Dracula, and that badass and terrifying Hellsing!Alucard.

@Applelight, make no mistake, I'm definitely going to try it, they're just not going to look happy about it. I mean they look ridiculous.
