So the Everfree Forest isn't part of Equestria?

It seems really strange that Ponyville would just happen to be on the edge of a country spanning multiple cities.
It's pronounced "Te-ah-low-ve"

Everfree Forest is land inside Equestria. Propably 1000 years earlier capitol was located there.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

Have we sunk so low as to be forced to compare Pinkie Pie and the Joker?
I'm almost ready to call dibs on a video of Pinkie Pie telling the Joker's other scar story, just because I thought of a kind of funny way to tie it into Generation 3.

Makes me wonder if the Everfree Forest used to be a normal forest, but tainted by loneliness and despair after the original Imperishable Nightmare Moon incident, transforming the whole region into what it is today.
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

^The capital was located in the Forest a thousand years ago, yes. Celestia presumably moved it after she banished Nightmare Moon to escape painful memories.

Or she just got a better castle in Canterlot, which had indoor plumbing and stuff.

[up][up][up] This is almost certainly the case, especially since the Twilight's book in episode two says that the last known location of the ancient castle of the royal pony sisters "is located in what is now Everfree Forest." At the very least Everfree Forest wasn't always around, not as it exists today.

I like to go with the idea that the everfree forest is what all of Equestria would look like if not for the ponies. From what I've seen ponies control everything in equestria, up to and including the Weather. They also say that everything happens by itself in that one forest. Maybe if an area is left alone without pony intervention, it becomes wild and self sustaining. After the whole Nightmare Moon incident I can imagine Equestria simply abandoning it and now everything works by itself

[up][up][up][up]It seems a bit odd though that what was once the capital would transform into such a sinister place. Even if Celestia wanted to move because of bad memories or whatever, you'd think a city that was once the capital would still be lived in and kept up. What if instead, the area was corrupted by whatever was affecting Luna. The forest could be mostly purged by now, but the initial attack scared everyone away and led to the fear everyone has for it.

Edit, because capitol and capital are not the same thing.

[up] I like to imagine my interpretation because it ties into the idea that ponies seem to control everything in equestria, possibly to keep everything utopia-esque. They get to choose the weather, choose the length of the days (Ceestia anyway), choose when to change seasons etc, they have a say in EVERYTHING. I like to think that without that, Equestria would revert to a more natrual (and wild) state like the everfree forest.

[up]I get that, but the Everfree Forest seems a bit more sinister than an area that is simply more natural than the rest of Equestria. Granted, I am basing this mostly off the pilot, where there was deliberate intervention, so maybe the ponies are overreacting.

[up][up] The everfree forest really isn't all that scary, it WOULD be from the POV of a pony who's gotten used to everything being picture perfect like the mane cast, but when it isn't night, it seems like a relatively normal forest, and outside of a few choice creatures it isn't all that dangerous (same could be said for most of our forests actually) either. In fact a lot of animals there are rather friendly. Not to mention Zecorah lives there aswell, completely defenceless, yet doesn't seem to have been attacked during the time she's lived in that forest

That sounds plausible. I was also thinking that perhaps it was just the fight between the sisters over the day and night that produced stray bursts of hateful magic that corrupted parts of the forest, giving birth to monsters and making it even less safe to live in than a normal forest.

^^Oh, I wouldn't call Zecora helpless. She seems to know a lot about the forest and how it works, at the very least, so I doubt she's just moved in, either.

[up][up][up]Yeah, I'm probably bringing in too many fanworks. As far as the actual show goes, there are a couple harmful creatures and plants, nothing you couldn't find in the woods on Earth. That's what I get for playing Story of the Blanks.

I do still think its plausible that Nightmare Moon temporarily contaminated the area, because I still find it odd that the place would be completely abandoned.
