So I just now realized that of the mane cast, only Applejack, Twilight, and Spike date back to G1. The rest are versions of characters just created for G3.
Fun fact: in G1, only princesses had baby dragons. Spike came with
Majesty and Dream Castle
, and his mold was reused for the dragons of
six more princesses
.

Adopted by commoners, yes. It's an
Older than Dirt legend/fairy tale theme.

Kindof undermining dont'cha think? I mean working her way up the ranks to attain the status of Celestia's prized pupil is insanely praise worthy, it would kinda make her struggle meaningless if she found out she was a princess

Perhaps Celestia legally adopts her then.
Because "for the lulz" is a perfectly good reason to do something.
Ah, but why would Princess Celestia let Twilight have a baby dragon if she's not a princess?

I heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from
Word Of God that Blueblood isn't Celestia's direct nephew so much as a second cousin's daughter's grandson or something like that.
Because "for the lulz" is a perfectly good reason to do something.
From what I remember it's like Celestia's mother's brother's descendant, removed like 52 times.
The '52 times removed' is definitely
Word Of God. That seems like it's good enough to promote someone to the aristocracy, though.
And I know I'm chiming in a little late, but I also like the
Sufficiently Analyzed Magic vibe as well. There's a lot of depth to be analyzed in this series, and yes, while it's a little bit silly to analyze FiM this closely, now that we've all accepted that silliness, let's put it aside and get down to details, eh? =D

Considering that most kids wouldn't know WHAT a duke is, that's acceptable.

Let's just say he was some little bastard in the right place at the right time.
"You're my favourite Princess ever!"
I think Blueblood saw Rarity as an asset

Probably just trying to sponge off of her.
"You're my favourite Princess ever!"
^^I imagine Blueblood liked being paid attention to by an attractive pony, but gave less than zero seconds of thought about paying attention to her. It's how he is: he probably viewed Rarity as nothing really different from the rose, a nice accompaniment for the glory of himself.
