It sounds kinda like Boast Busters, actually, with a bit of a change in plot.

It's a class reunion, not a spellcasting contest. Relative power wouldn't factor or come up, I think.

Actually, a sort of magical competition would be interesting. Twilight begins to despair as there is someone beating her out in each category (someone different each time), but is shown that as a generalist, she's still very good, even if there is always someone better in specific schools of magic.

The diffrence between Boast Busters is that Trixie was full of shit. The contenders would be actual hardworking pepole who try their hardest and put in a lot of effort to get where they are.

I can imagine a unicorn guard pulling off a telekinetic sleeper hold to good effect. I mean, other than setting traps and things like that, the most efficient battle magic would most likely be the least flashy.

No, an episode with a lass reunion would be Boast Busters-y. A mage competition would have a different moral. Something about Always Someone Better.
