Methinks that Twi just has power disproportionate to her age or something, a senior unicorn with a lifetime of training would be able to match her spell for spell.
Present-day Star Swirl has some kind of uber-talent to compensate for not being a unicorn. She has a huge complex about not being a unicorn like her ancestral namesake.
Great, now I'm depressed about how I never get to talk to my friends from high school anymore...
That would be an interesting episode.

The lovers discussion is brewing, I can feel it. I'll be back in a while

Yeah. The Star Swirl toy that was released before Luna Eclipsed is a young, female pony.
There was at least one bit of fanart with the present-day Star Swirl being the descendent of Star Swirl The Bearded, trying to live up to his reputation.

Say, if Twi did have a school reunion, how might her former classmates react to her?

Wait... does that mean Lyra went to Celestia's school for gifted unicorns?

I actually really enjoyed one piece of fanart that implied that Star Swirl was a
mare who invented Twilight's #25 and gave herself a beard because the Canterlot College of Magic wouldn't accept her because she was female.

@Ginger: Lyra is the second pony we see in the present day in the pilot; she waves to Twilight as she's running across the bridge from the library.

Can you think inside the chimney?

Yes, Lyra went to the school for Gifted Unicorns, but dropped out when she learned there were no spells to turn herself into a human, so she could conduct research on her own.
