I've thought of doing one of Project Horizons as I read, but I'm not sure I could say anything unique or new.

ugh, well if you can stand it, just be awars that later one you get the on screen torture, maiming, and gang rape of the main character in one scene.

Errugh...I'm sorry but I just can't abide that. I know many do, and that it could be a good story really but...imo not with cute little cartoon ponies.

Which doesn't alter the fact it happens. from that point on that will have happened to the character. Part of their story. You can't just take little snipets out of it that go to far and tell people to skip them. Once it is part of the story, it is PART of the story. If you have to give a warning for one part of the story, that is then valid for the entire thing.

Yeah.. there's a reason PH gets the flak it does. Mostly for going way WAY to far into the grimdark. FOE was dark, but NEVER slipped into Grimdark.

Yes, it is part of the story. But the fact remains that there's people who want to read the story but not have those details explicitly spelled out, people who can handle the concept so long as it doesn't get squishy. Sanitizing the story like that removes a lot of the meaning, but the fact remains that it's still the kind of thing you need to warn people about because they'll be extremely upset if they walk into a graphic rape scene without knowing that stuff is going to get really bad. The link is a concession to those people.

Also, PH is not Grimdark for the exact same reasons as the original fic, by the definition that I've seen you using. The fact that it's a lot darker doesn't make it Grimdark.

.... once you cross into THAT territory.. you've gone grimdark, crushing something THAT much, that much pain misery and endless suffering.....

I just don't get how simply adding a link to skip it somehow makes it not as big an issue, or some people can just say "Well if you don't like it, skip it." No part of a story should be skipped, if you are writing a part that you know people might have issues with, then you need to figure out if you really need that part in your story. once it is added, it effects the entire story. unless there is absolutely zero impact on anything outside of the skipped scene, in which case, why the hell are you putting it in in the first place?

If you are going to do that, then put the warning right on the first page and tell the reader to skip the entire story if they can't handle it. Because you should NEVER be telling someone to skip any part of a story, if there is any part that some people should skip over, then either it shouldn't be a part of the story, or the entire story should be skipped.

Well, it does examine the idea of what would happen if your crew wasn't as idealistic or innocent as Little Pip's party. Comparatively speaking, they got lucky.

Now here's a question: What is the difference between "Dark" and "Grimdark"?

Mostly that grimdark adds copious amounts of hopelessness to the equation.

And here I thought it had to do with copious amount of gore.

Grimdark, is basically dark just for the sake of being dark. Over the top, unending pain misery despair. Just reveling in making things as bad as you can and putting your characters through hell. And yes Grimdark pretty much means, everyone in the story is fucked. That things will always be shit, there will always be pain misery and suffering, and hope is illusion.

That, is just a really really cheap way of making it dark/grimdark that takes no real thought. Gore in and of itself, may be disgusting, but that's it. It's how it's used the determine if it's dark or grimdark, or hell even played for comedy.

Would you guys believe I've been a huge 40k fan since 1998? Despite my aversion to grimdark.
