The original FOE was kind of weird in that it almost felt like it got less dark as the story went on. Like, by about halfway through you can see stuff actually start getting better.

I never read FOE because I don't want to get into a story (especially a grimdark story) that's longer than War and Peace.

I think that might have been intentional on the writer's part.

Except FOE is NEVER Grimdark. Dark yes, but never Grimdark. And yes it did get better as the story went on, as Li'lpip's efforts began to pay off.

It'd be nice if you guys go talk about FOE on the FOE thread.

@Badwolf: I think that Rainbow Dash cheated during the rope part of the competetion, but she get's away with it because she's awesome and AJ is just a lame background pony.

You know there are times the thread goes into topics I don't much care for, know what I do? Just leave for a little bit and wait for it to switch to something else.

Iron Pony, Dash cheated at least in spirit, but the whole thing was just badly arranged to not account for the wings in the first place.

@ Marston: I would argue that since the pony who was there specifically to keep things fair and point out rule breakings didn't say anything that it was in fact not cheating.

@Seraphem: The problem isn't the subject matter, it's that the conversation proceeds exactly the same way every time it comes up. And as has been noted, the whole point of the FOE thread is so that this thread doesn't get clogged with discussion.

Anyway, on grimdark vs. dark. The former is basically Nihilism: the story. Nothing is accomplished and there's no progress. All the suffering is for nothing. Dark is when there is development, but the story is still characterized by suffering, pain, angst, etc. Something can be incredibly dark and disturbing while not technically being Grimdark. Like Berserk. It's one of the darkest things I've ever read, but there's still development happening on a personal level for the characters.

Also, it's important not to conflate those with Dark Fic the trope, which simply means "any fanfic that's closer to the cynicism end of the Sliding Scale Long Name than the source work". I can handle original works that are dark, but I do not like Dark Fic (or any fic that significantly modifies the source material for non-Rule of Funny reason).

Regarding the Iron Pony competition: RD technically wasn't cheating, but she definitely went against the spirit of the competition, which was itself badly defined to start with.

Since Twilight's a royal now, she's probably has the biggest one on display in her holdings. Not sure if the others would have any, where'd they keep them? I guess Rainbow Dash might have a cloud one somewhere.
