@Seraphem: The problem isn't the subject matter, it's that the conversation proceeds
exactly the same way every time it comes up. And as has been noted, the whole point of the FOE thread is so that this thread doesn't get clogged with discussion.
Anyway, on grimdark vs. dark. The former is basically Nihilism: the story. Nothing is accomplished and there's no progress. All the suffering is for nothing. Dark is when there is development, but the story is still characterized by suffering, pain, angst, etc. Something can be
incredibly dark and disturbing while not technically being Grimdark. Like
Berserk. It's one of the darkest things I've ever read, but there's still development happening on a personal level for the characters.
Also, it's important not to conflate those with
Dark Fic the trope, which simply means "any fanfic that's closer to the cynicism end of the
Sliding Scale Long Name than the source work". I can handle
original works that are dark, but I do
not like
Dark Fic (or any fic that significantly modifies the source material for non-
Rule of Funny reason).
Regarding the Iron Pony competition: RD
technically wasn't cheating, but she definitely went against the spirit of the competition, which was itself badly defined to start with.
