Yeah, we could take this to the other thread.

Which is why I really have reservations about 40k, a universe that bleak is pointless. It's a static void of unending suffering where not even the villains have a chance of victory. Everyone is suffering just as badly and it will always be that way.

Personally, I'd say that FOE is dark, but not grimdark per say: It never goes too far with the darkness, and there is sort of a Earn your happy ending to it, or at least the Bittersweet Ending version of that trope. I've seen way too many people who make it sound like the Nineteen Eighty-Four of pony fanfics when it's really not.

Now, Project Horizons on the other hand...... Calling that fic Grimdark is a huge understatement. Pretty much everything FOE did right, this fic did wrong, and it's also way more graphic and needlessly cruel then anything in FOE.

I'll admit to being into the creepy, dark side of the fandom earlier on, but it wore out on me really fast. It just felt like the same thing over and over— and people just trying to make another Cupcakes.

@Posey Depends on how sadistic and/or cynical the author's feeling. A non-fic example would be Neon Genesis Evangalion. Hideki Anno was depressed when the show (and End of Evangalion was made) so he took it out on the cast and setting, resulting in humanity's inevitable extinction (there are only two people left and that world so Crapsack that everyone else would rather remain a puddle of Tang than to exist) By contrast we have the Rebuild movies, made during a time when Anno was not depressed and the cast felt and are a lot better as a result.

Granted that sometime's isn't the driving force of Dark works.

BTW, here's a random thought that came to my mind: Imagine if, instead of having Twilight become an alicorn at the end {Which would be saved for S4}, the S3 finale focused entirely on the Cutie Mark Swap instead. Then we get to the part where supposedly the mane 5 accidently vaporize Twilight...... And then a "To be continued" text pops up, followed by the usual happy theme song playing over the credits.

Just imagine how pissed we all would be, especially since we'd have to wait for S4 to premire before finding out what actually happend.

Pretty much what Marston said.

And yeah Cupcakes is a great example of Grimdark. Rainbow Factory as well, and that one does it with very little, if any actual gore.

It's less the rape itself, bad yes, and I also have issues with those other two scenes as well. It's just how freaking brutal that entire scene is. Even without the rape itself, the rest of what happens to her is enough to not make me want to touch that thing with a ten foot pole. So is at least the first of those other scenes, hadn't heard of the second one.

I'm not so sure. Incredibly bleak, yes. But remember that they do take place in the same verse, so we do know in the end it's not all for nothing. So there's going to be a way out, even if I have to dig through more suffering to get there.

Plus, PH does have a nice sense of dark humour the original frankly wasn't very good at.

Besides, Hoofington's an interesting place to explore, at least for me.

Good, I don't like dark humor. And none of that is because of anything the PH characters do. Any chance of hope, from the story perspective, is in pure Dues Ex Machina territory. And even then it doesn't help all the shit that goes on in the backstory.

The real question is "Is this worth the mental and emotional investment?" or, more simply, "Why should I care?"

I think it is, because one of, if not the, main theme is that it closely examines the question of what really separates the heroes from the villains if they have the same motivations and the same methods?

The original? I found the answer it gave was pretty unsatisfactory and the end result was I had absolutely no reason to root for the protagonists.

Can't comment on Project Horizons, seeing as I haven't read it, but it strikes me as somewhat odd to complain about that being "too dark" as a reason for being put off of reading it when the original, in an utterly delightful scene, had one of the good guys gunning down a kid and making a pithy one-liner.

@Bad: Here here. Most of the reason I can't get into grimdark is because despair takes place over actual character development. Or, maybe I just read crappy grimdark.
