I tend to rate the ponies' (or at least Twilight's) affection for Spike as more Storge than anything else. The cast are kinda like surrogate mother/big sister figures.

And in Twilight's case, she literally is Spike's surrogate mother.

@Ginger: Storge is more familial affection, while Phileo is more based on common interest and friendship. I think that Spike's relationship with the cast is more familial in nature than friendship.

@Rich: Yeah, Twilight is a mother figure to him, and the other ponies are sister/aunt type relationships.

Anyway, even though Twilight is like a mother to Spike, that he hangs out with her friends, and has a crush on one of them, is an especially odd dynamic. As far as age differences go, it would be more like if a young boy hung out with his older sister's friends.

It's more the hair that does it for me. I'm not sure why.

Anyway, I'm not sure how you're going to pin down which ponies are "best best friends", but I do notice that for any group of friends, some ties are going to be demonstrably stronger than others.

A relationship chart* would probably better illustrate the point.

But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

I don't see much of the appeal either, though I DO think it looks pretty, though I'm not really attracted to it........I just posted it to screw with ginger.
