You know, I'm afraid (but also kinda curious) to see what would happen if Rarity didn't repress her anger like she does there.

I think it depends whether we're talking about sexual fanservice or more general Pandering to the Base type stuff. There's obviously not going to be any sexual fanservice in the show, stuff like this aside* .

[up][up][up]Probably tear Sweetie a new one (verbally, that is). That's basically what she does later.

And I seriously doubt that was fanservice of ANY kind; only a male that REALLY, REALLY thought about it would appreciate it; if it was supposed to be low-grade fanservice, then it was rather poorly designed as it would go over most of our male heads.

I certainly didn't consider it fanservice of any kind; I liked that Spike was finally getting recognition, not that a male character was getting doted on by older women. Does that sort of thing usually factor in?

[up][up]Ah, right, the reactions. That's why I like posting that link.[lol]

[up]I don't get that either. Boys of the age of the target audience would probably yell "COOTIES", and older males are probably either not going to care too much about that kind of attention, as it's more of a little brother with sisters than anything romantic.

Skimming through the pages, I see I've missed talk about a pegasus Applejack vs. Rainbow Dash, shipping buildings with buildings, and shipping Pinkie Pie with a pan that's really Rainbow Dash.

Have I missed anything strange, though? [lol]

[up][up][up]Maybe in some cases but not this; this was just a device to show us how much attention he recieves so that his downfall makes more sense. Or, the writers just wanted to throw in a heartwarming moment. Hey, that's a good enough reason to throw a scene in!tongue

If you follow thye theory that Spike represents us all male viewers in a sense it would be fanservice but not in an erotic/sexual way at all.

I don't get the point, then. But I've never been a little boy, so I don't understand how attention from older girls is supposed to be good, or appealing to a male audience.
Well, I'm not sure, but I find that, at least when a guy is old enough or romantically-minded enough, hearing something from a girl tends to magnify its value; the same insult will feel harsher to hear from a girl than another guy, and the same compliment will be worth so much more from a girl than from another guy. I think there is some subconscious reaction of "girl = potential future romantic partner" even when a guy has reason to believe it is unlikely.

Again, I'm not sure. But intuitively this is how it seems to be from having said reaction myself, not to mention seems vaguely apparent from the behaviour of other guys.

So, portraying a boy being surrounded and complimented by several girls has that kind of nice feel that I'm guessing guys are especially prone to appreciating.

Maybe if you want it to, but you'll never convince me that that scene was specifically designed to be toned-down fanservice. -.- It was an unintentional side effect that SOME found to be fanservice-y, if that.

[up]Whether or not Spike recieving recognition and attention from the mane 6 was supposed to be fanservice.

AGAIN, I wasn't saying it was fanservice. I was saying it was VAGUELY SIMILAR to fanservice. You are taking what I said WAY too literally.

As for why I think said attention being from older girls would factor in, see a few posts above.

@Fallen Legend: I tend to rate the ponies' (or at least Twilight's) affection for Spike as more Storge than anything else. The cast are kinda like surrogate mother/big sister figures.

[up][up][up][up] Of course it was a misunderstanding. A very annoying one at that, as I thought I had already made clear that I wasn't calling it fanservice, just making a comparison.

Whatever, this thread probably puts it better.
