Thanks Death. This is a great help. It means that I can have a 'smart guy' to handle everything from healing to weather problems to magic abnormalities, and then the engineer who just tends to the ship and its weapon systems.

Yeah, it's not quite as punchy... what she's literally saying is 'the very wonderful Trixie', though, which is even less so.

Post of the Day #377

Seeing how the three tribes came to be (and where the crystal ponies fall in all that) would be interesting, but i think they should avoid a full creation myth.

Also on the Winter Wrap Up thing, the way I heard Twilight phrased sounded like she was say that Ponyville had been doing it the Earth Pony way for hundreds of years, not that Earth Ponies had been doing it for hundreds of years and that is how Ponyville does it.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

Oh hey, are supporting protagonists ever heard of in shonen series.

How do you mean? I can think of a few in One Piece, certainly (even without classing the other eight Straw Hats as 'supporting', which they technically are.)

What I mean is, I'm starting to make my lead a general all round explorer, and I'm wondering if I should use a different pony as the Captain of the ship, which makes the lead not the one in overall charge. Just...musing. I don't really know what I mean.

Eeyup. You can check the page to see them. Medaka Box, for example, has Zenkichi as the Supporting Protagonist and Medaka as The Hero. Of course, Medaka Box is largely a parody, and plays shonen tropes rather oddly.

EDIT:

Not what Supporting Protagonist means. It means the protagonist and The Hero aren't the same person.

@Applelight - Of course there are Supporting Protagonist in shonen action works. They tend to not to live very long, though. [lol]

For a very excellent example of Supporting Protagonist, there is Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist. He is basically Aragorn, except he isn't a royalty and instead a Person of Mass Destruction.

Oh, and I would like to take this opportunity to recommend FMA manga in general. It's totally not because I am a self-proclaimed #1 fan of Hiromu Arakawa. Totally not.

Roy Mustang isn't The Protagonist, so he doesn't count.

Look at the page, people! It is the main character. Not one of the main characters. The main character. Who is also not The Hero.

Does that even make sense? tongue

EDIT: Probably not.

Sorry I'll take all this to the fanfic thread.

Meh, semantics.

Semantics are important. Especially when they lead to completely different answers. Under your deffinition, the answer goes from "Yes, there are a couple" to "One that doesn't have any would be really odd" and results in being completely unhelpful to Applelight.

@Applelight: Yes, that would both be a Supporting Protagonist and a perfectly valid writing decision.

So, I could have the lead as a guy who just wants to see the world and explore, not necessarily lead the crew. So the captain of this ship is the one who wants to be the master (lead in a shonen goal right?) and the lead is just coming along for the ride. That make sense? tongue

@Applelight: It's basically when the story follows a character who isn't The Hero. It's possible, but doing that might complicate things.

@Applelight - Master of...what? I usually dislike To Be a Master trope because how vague it tends to be. In addition, let's say if the captain does become a "master." Then what? You need to consider that, unless having him realize that his motivation has no solid direction is part of his Character Development.

@Human!Spitfire - I tend to go through quiet rage whenever I see a character wearing tight bodysuit (or whatever it is) that is zipped down to expose cleavage. Those tend to override my Rule of Sexy application core.
