No, but the town could simply be about a century old, not multiple centuries. She's very old, but I don't think that she's impossibly old.

Then it's a relatively recent town. Simple.

But how can a new town have a hundreds year old tradition?

@con Twilight said that it was an Earth Pony tradition. Christmas tradition is centuries older than the USA, but it's still a national holiday.

Are you saying that before Ponyville existed it was winter forever? And that Ponyville wraps up winter everywhere (which we know isn't true because it's always the slowest)?

I'm not sure if it is technically a national holiday, actually. There are lots of people who don't celebrate it.

Plus, I'm pretty sure no one gets Casmir Pulaski Day off except in Illinois.

You know there is a very simple explanation for all of this. It's a retcon.

[down]That really depends on whether Granny Smith is really several hundred years old or not.

@Mio Except that nothing was contradicted. There's nothing that needed a retcon.

I will have continuity, even if I have to stretch my brain to the ends of the earth to get it.

@con You don't need to stretch anything. Traditions can be older than the places where they're practiced. It's quite common.

Thread Hop.

Yeah, I'm in the camp that Ponyville is relatively recent, Granny is old but not ancient, and the Winter Wrap Up tradition predates the founding of Ponyville. Granny's family were settlers and probably brought the tradition with them when they founded the town.

But I feel that Twi implied that it was a Ponyville tradition, not an Earth Pony one. It's not much of a "tradition" for them when there's nopony with magic around, cause they gotta do it that way anyway.

I think that's the most logical explanation.

"Help the Earth Pony way". Not Ponyville way. The Earth Pony way.

Yeah, from what I remember Twi always refers to it as "earth pony" tradition rather than "Ponyville" tradition, which is really kinda odd if it's specific to that town.

Y'know what I really want? The legends of how ponies came to be. Basically, where did the tribes come from.

That is why it is called a "myth."

However, the word "myth, " despite its stigma, does not lesson the significance of the truths it contains.

Just because it never happened doesn't mean it isn't true.

Seeing how the three tribes came to be (and where the crystal ponies fall in all that) would be interesting, but i think they should avoid a full creation myth.

Also on the Winter Wrap Up thing, the way I heard Twilight phrased sounded like she was say that Ponyville had been doing it the Earth Pony way for hundreds of years, not that Earth Ponies had been doing it for hundreds of years and that is how Ponyville does it.

Don't we have a trope for particular plot elements in fanfiction that are crazy common for a specific fandom? Like "Twi miscasts a spell" being the opening for a ton of fics for MLP.
