As to the Spike/Rarity shipping, yes child/adult pairing is wrong, however, it all depends on what the definition of 'child' and 'adult' are. Even different human cultures have different ideas on what constitutes each, and these at least all use the same template of human beings and human development yet still get vastly varying results in what appropriate and what's not.
now add in a completely different species, two in fact in Spike/Rarity cases, that we already know per
Word Of God mature a in a way unlike humans, so applying human definitions just doesn't work at a 1:1 comparison. Firstly there's the physical aspect of sexual maturity, which is the easy one to measure you either are, or are not able to have kids, obviously any non-platonic relations that cross
that boundary are right out.
But then there's the emotional maturity, that's where things get murky. Per
Word Of God, ponies mature much faster physically then they do emotionally, but do we know the same is true for dragons? For all we know it could be inverted there, Spike could become, mentally and emotionally, an adult way before he actually grows out of his little baby dragon body. And the deliberate
Vague Age of the entire cast doesn't help much in establishing these kinds of parameters.
So yes adult/child pairings are wrong, and even without that I really don't like the idea of Spike/Rarity, I think is crush on her is cute, but just that a childhood crush, and that's just how it's played, and if Rarity ever found out I highly, highly doubt she'd reciprocate (oh episode Idea*) but whose to say that Spike won't mature faster then Rarity and soon match/exceed her emotional maturity level?
- Rarity finds out about Spike's crush, she tries to avoid hurting his feelings, but keeps getting misunderstood and just convincing Spike more and more that there destined to be together, while she tries to let him down easy, eventually things spiral out of control and she ends up breaking his heart in a big public display that also imbaresses him in front of everyone. Giving the Aesop that, while avoiding hurting someone feelings is great, sometimes it's just better to be completely honest about your feelings up front rather then let things build up to something that will hurt even more.

i've noticed, that's what got me off on this tangent.
