I can see it now. A gray, drab city, with unremarkable ponies walking back and forth, performing their duties without even noticing he's there. Everything works exactly as it should, not better, not worse. So, he decides to liven up the place, and snaps his fingers. And yet nothing happens. They still don't notice him, everything is still running perfectly, and no amount of his magic can change it.

He knows his mindgames, which properly used can end a particular auditor, and he'd find out pretty quickly that they're only doing what they do because the slightest chaos is more reality paperwork for them, and he'd enjoy their annoyance. Both are similarly powered, too, so I don't think he'd be afraid of them. Maybe hate them, or see them as rivals, but not fear. But that's just me.

I'm wondering if they should just get a basic skill for free. Something to do with the earth. I mean, they're not called earth ponies for nothing.
And then you could have a flaw/variant involving your character not having one or more basic skills their race normally gets for free, in exchange for skill/attribute points.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
