It seems like a huge leap to go from there are a couple of shooting stars to these shooting stars must be AJ's parents.

Well, it's the fact that the shooting stars are always shown together (if it was just to look nice, why not just one shooting star?); and they show up in at least two different scenes—one of which was shortly after Granny Smith said everyone in the family would be there.

FIM would hardly be the first story to use stars to represent someone dead.

@Badwolf: Shooting stars are pretty common symbolism for someone who has passed away. The fact that there are two of them and they otherwise don't really have any reason to be in this episode, let alone twice, mean they were probably intended as a reference to her parents.

I keep wanting to make a joke about how "a bunch of royal dead guys are watching us", but that kind of requires a way to construct the dialogue in a way that doesn't imply that Applejack isn't talking about family. :/

@Bad What purpose do those shooting stars serve otherwise? They aren't a plot point. They aren't a joke. The only other thing they could be is symbolic.

She had to set up the camera on a timer, then run and slide to get in the picture on time. I suspect she would have posed better if she had a little more time.
