Our own society's focus on technology has us inevitably looking up, and the idea of our planet eventually just being a fond starting point isn't all that alien.
Ponies' focus on internal stability and magic to solve problems has stunted technological development. If they made contact with any foreign planets, it'd be less up and more sideways, and the concept of space travel probably hasn't even entered the public consciousness on a seriously-considered level.
So my vote is that the planet-naming question wouldn't even occur to them until they made contact, got put on the spot, and had to bullshit something. Yeah, like that.
