Perhaps every civilization in the universe refers to their home planet as "Earth", since what else would it be but the ground you're standing on? tongue

@Sereg That still contradicts the suggestion to name the Earth Pony land "Earth", though, so you just kinda have to pick one as being true and go with it.

Not if they're an aquatic race.

Then their planet would be "Wet."

You may have heard of a place called New York, New York.tongue This is not an uncommon phenomenon.

@Sereg

New York City, New York, actually. My point stands. tongue

Yeah, because no one ''ever'' leaves out the word city.

And as I said, it's hardly a unique phenomenon.

If it's not uncommon, then what other examples are there aside from the one that is only an example when people improperly shorten the name? tongue

I agree that every alien civilisation use word for Earth in their language when names their homeworld, sometimes they could use Air or Water instead and maybe use one their old languages (like we use Terra). Thats my headcanon for every Sci FI. Same with MLPFIM, "Earth" used in show never had anything to do with our world.

Alien civilization's name for Earth is more likely to be something like TQ 49719288-delta-apple-cannonball. Just another one among the countless planets in the universe, albeit one that's actually newsworthy, for a change.

Or maybe [Insert letter from some alien alphabet] and [Insert name of alien animal or mythological creature]

Or more this will be name for our Star.

As the other four former element bearers from Discord's defeat are important.

That reminds me of the old theory that the other 4 are the stars from the pilot.

They don't call it Earth. Earth was one of the proposed names for the new Earth Pony land. "Earth" in the context of their world simply refers to the ground they walk on, not the planet as a whole.

Besides, Earth is already the name of the Suppox planet.

I don't think Magic is supposed to be literally Magic. It seems to be more like faith in one's friends. Twilight discovered the element when she realized how happy she was to see her new friends there, and she lost her colors in Return of Harmony when she finally gave into despair and lost her faith.

I don't get why they call it Magic either. Perhaps a reference to the show title? Anyway, I just pretend the 6th element is actually Friendship, like it's obviously supposed to be.

I always thought that magic and friendship were interchangeable too.

and yeah, from what we see it seems that "magic" and friendship" are one in the same for the Elements. The Element of Magic, IS linked to magical power, but the Elements on the whole require a strong bond of friendship between the bearers to work.

If we take that everything in that world is seeped in magic...we can say that it's like the force before Lucas ruined it by revealed that it was germs all along. tongue It surrounds and binds everything together, and when a pony greys out, it's because their magic has literally left them.

@Perpetual Lurker:

Singapore, Singapore

San Marino, San Marino

Dijabouti, Dijabouti

Vatican City, Vatican City

Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Guatemala, Guatemala

Kuwait, Kuwait

For a start.

Do you want cases whoch aren't a capital city and their country? Here's some from the US alone.

Note how almost all of those are City-states. The one city is the entirety of the place.

And I'm not disputing different places having the same name. I'm disputing naming a country after the planet. And this is a really silly argument.

I don't get what the big deal with the earth thing is. "earth" can also mean "dirt" as opposed to being the planet. The fact that Puddinghead used it is just a side effect of the fact that the ponies speak English. Or Pinkie is just breaking the 4th wall again.

Luxembourg and Kuwait aren't city-states. Luxembourg's just a really tiny country like Andora and Monaco.

As I said, those are just capitol cities and their country. And ignoring cases like Mexico City as you wouldn't accept that. If we expand to any place with the same name, the list becomes huge.

and yeah, from what we see it seems that "magic" and friendship" are one in the same for the Elements. The Element of Magic, IS linked to magical power, but the Elements on the whole require a strong bond of friendship between the bearers to work.

I would emphasise that the beaerer of magic's friendship and their magic are both important even beyond the normal bond, but yes.

City->Country is different than Country->Planet, and in any case, I'm filling this under "really silly detail that doesn't deserve overthinking."

There's also Mexico (City), Mexico.

On the topic of Earth: I do in fact wonder how many human cultures have/had names in their native tongues to describe the planet being a variation of "earth", "dirt", and/or "world".
