The only way a country could be considered planetary is if it was a worldwide Empire. Rome and Alexander gave it good tries but didn't even get close.

@Perpetual Lurker: Well, if that's what you mean, then fine. But I see nothing weird about that. I'm pretty sure that Sci-Fi does that.

@Sinclair: The results would be extremely skewed due to the fact that most cultures were only made aware of Earth's status as a planet after coming across another culture's term for the planet.

and when a pony greys out, it's because their magic has literally left them.

Except they could still use magic.

We could just call the world Eqeustria exists in Terra. Do we need to pun it up?

On the topic of Earth: I do in fact wonder how many human cultures have/had names in their native tongues to describe the planet being a variation of "earth", "dirt", and/or "world".

Well the Suppox do at least.

Perhaps every civilization in the universe refers to their home planet as "Earth", since what else would it be but the ground you're standing on?

I totally forget which (it wasn't otherwise memorable or particularly good), but one of the "ponies connect to Earth Stargate style" fanfics had Celestia run into this problem with a human ambassador.

"Equestria's a country, not the planet."

"Oh. Well what do you call your planet?"

"Earth."

"...oh dear."

Clearly the answer was to refer to them as Earth-A and Earth-1.

A lot of sci-fi will circumvent this by having alien races call their planet something that translates to "home" or "cradle" or somesuch, often in a dead language of their own.

Not really. It's in the brainfile of "dull enough that I don't remember its name", but even those have a decent moment every once in a while that you wish was in a better story.

[up][up][up]For me solution is simple: Universal Translator use word alien planet from listener language or don't translate alien word for their homeworld name. Or maybe to avoid confusion old dead languge could be used for naming homewords, and humans would be using Terra for their world.
Because he know I'm going to go out in this plane and I'm going to remove one of His creations from His universe.

That's usually a background justification for sci-fi that end up calling our planet Terra. Just in case other races did the same thing, using a dead language word keeps the faux pas out of the lingua franca.

I prefer Terra instead generic Earth.

And they never named their world in show anyway.

Sleep? Who needs sleep? I certainly don't. Not when I have a truckload of re-installing to do.

...

I'm totally going to be sleep-deprived Applejack later, aren't I?
