I think the idea that "people should be able to watch what they want" should be the norm, but the world doesn't always work that way.

Yeah, I just don't like the idea of getting lumped in with activists for a cause that I don't have any involvement in beyond general well-wishing. Heck, I don't even like the term "brony" that much, and I don't wouldn't use it to describe myself.

I'm not any kind of "activist." Personally, I don't think they actually accomplish much. It's people who do what they want despite societal stigmas that change the world a bit at a time.

Personally, I see that activism works only occasionally, and if it goes on for too long the activist groups run the risk of becoming problems themselves.

Oh, and I also think people should watch whatever they want to watch, and I do so.

I don't get on with self-righteous types.

I prefer to be honest with myself. I know I'm kind of a jerk.

This is so freaking true. [awesome] Like half the people in my grad school classes this semester were like that. They were really into discussing "causes" and making a big fuss over them, but they didn't actually accomplish much besides annoying people who didn't care either way.

@Mio: I know what you mean. It's tough to draw a line between "the show must be good because boys like it" and "boys just happen to like it because it's quality entertainment." Personally, I just watch it because I enjoy watching it, and the fact that it's aimed at girls doesn't really affect my stance much. If it's good, it's good, regardless of the intended target audience. I don't really feel like I need to comment on that much beyond "It's a show of quality that it has such appeal for so many demographics".

@JT: I'm glad you agree. That's one of the things that makes FIM so very special.

I don't think it's that boys like the show, rather that people outside the target demographic like it and that's pretty impressive. If a new GI Joe cartoon suddenly got a massive fanbase full of girls, there would probably be a similar reaction.

Oh, and as far the previous generations of MLP go, I can kinda see why they might be miffed that FIM gets all the attention, but at the same time it's really to be expected. The reason FIM was such a big deal isn't because people outside the target demographic liked it, it was because there were so many people who liked it.

Yes, there are adult male fans of previous generations, but those were such a niche audience that it was to be expected; everything probably has at least a few people outside the target audience who enjoy it. The reason it stuck out so much here is because the niche part of the audience erupted and nearly made it mainstream. A few people who like something unusual isn't a big deal; thousands of people who like something unusual is.

@J Teeth: I'm in the same position, in that I think the show is good, regardless of the target demographics. I guess I just don't have quite the same opinion on the greater "social implications" of the fandom.

@Purple Dalek: I really don't think it would. In fact experience has taught me that the opposite would likely happen.

I never understood why "It's Popular, Now It Sucks" is a thing.

Personally, if there's something I like, I'm glad when lots of other people can enjoy it.

@Connie Because liking something obscure can give one a smug sense of self-satisfaction.

[up][up] Some people want to feel unique, and that there's something that sets them apart from every other person.

Ironically, in trying so hard to be unique they become a part of the huge mass of people who are trying the same thing.

I'm sorry, but if watching a TV show is the only thing that makes you feel special, then there's no hope for you.

I just looked at the MLP part of the It's Popular, Now It Sucks page. It says that 'Some bronies that were fans of the show since the beginning disliked how the writers tried to appeal more to the new fandom after its discovery. It is evident in Season 2 especially comparing it to Season 1.'

I have no idea how this can be the case, since I'm sure that season 2 was in production before Bronies were noticed by the show's makers. I don't see any pandering, outside of Derpy, anyway, in the season. As for this season, the only episode which was fan pandering would be Magic Dual, and that was a good episode.

Magic Duel was blatant pandering.

It was also freaking awesome.

[up][up] I've learned not to trust edits on that kind of page much. I mean, I found somewhere (internet backdraft, apparently, when it had examples) that apparently liking Pinkie Pie would earn you mockery in some circles. Did that guy take a "best pony" mock war seriously or what?

And to get back on topic, once the girl show ghetto is created, it reinforces itself. Imagine an animator getting hired to write one of those shows back when it was going full strength. He'd be all "this is a waste, but I need the money. Let's get this over with" and put little effort on it.

I just wish the Call Of Battlefield Warfighter Ghetto would go away.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

@Marston

People are using scripts to cheat on that poll, so the gap is way larger than it should be.
