Would you all mind if I did a live watch?

Sombra was a shadow. Shadows can hide behind the light.

Also the spoilery stuff (Trixie) suggests he's not all dead or at least will influence future episodes.

Go ahead Apple.

@Enlong: Fair point. The episode was still good despite his lack of screentime and development.

I get the feeling that they don't even work and she just made them up.

but if you say that they'll stop working for sure.

Soooo... does anyone think that Celly actually planned from the beginning for Twilight to sacrifice her grades to save the Empire?

I got the impression that she actually did intend for Twi to do it all by herself, and only decided after the fact that Twi's actions constituted a passing performance.
That would be running a punchline into the ground.

Apparently his horn was intact. My stream started lagging near the end, so I'll have to check it out on Youtube later.

@Applelight: Fine with me.

@Meta: I'm pretty sure Twilight would have passed in just about any circumstance that didn't result in the empire getting obliterated.

@ Meta, yeah though I do think she added the "it must be you and you alone" just to see if, should the need arise, Twi would put the mission above herself, knowing she would of course.

also yes do a live watch

Plus for those that missed it, Scootaloo episode confirmed

I find it rather weird that Discord, the force of nature, was the more in your face personal villain, while Sombra the Dark Lord type villain was more of the looming threat. Perhaps it would have been best if it was the other way around? Then again people like Discord as the Evil God Imp so probably not.

I kind of wish that these openings would stop treating these characters like this is the first time we have meet'em. I know, gotta be watchable in any order. But, still.

@Meta: Not really, I suspect Celestia knew that Sombra was a wily bugger, so she gave Twi a bit of leeway.

I like that decision not humans and human like creatures. Tirak always didn't fit to MLPFIM world for me because of that, but after seeing Minotaur in episode I'm less scepctical about that. As long it will not be to human I will be OK with that.

What about Megan? Also, go ahead Apple.

Well, seeing as how almost ALL of Celestia's test have been Tricksy so far, I'd say Celestia planned that from the start. And quite the lesson too, teaching Twilight to trust her heart rather then to blindly follow instructions, even if it was from her own Sovereign Princess.

Makes you wonder if she's planning something...

There was a LOT of focus given to Sombra's horn. We saw it capable of apparently working independently, corrupting the landscape on it's own, and it regenerated on it's own. Not sure how common that is. We also saw a pretty clear shot of it being blown away. I can't really help but imagine that the Horn of Sombra, at least, will be of importance.

Anyone find it kind of funny that even the red dragon from the ep "Dragonshy" got more fleshed out as a character than Sombra?

That whole "you must do it yourself" thing always seemed a little hinky given how important friendship and working together has been in the show, so I prefer to think that it was just part of the test.

Why Celestia is using the fate of an entire kingdom as a test I don't know. Hey Celly, Luna wants to go along. Maybe you should let her.

Thats what I assumed all along.

@Crow: Probably due to the fact that 1. The empire needed to be saved. 2. Twilight has saved Equestria multiple times by this point 3. Twilight has reason to care, since her Brother and his wife are in charge of the place 4. Celestia isn't going to let a teaching opportunity go to waste.

Also, there are now going to be like a zillion fanfics about what various characters see when they look into that door.

Don't forget that though Celestia is quite the planner, but she also trusts Twilight absolutely.

(Well, most of the time.)

Alright, vote time. Who actually thinks Sombra ISN'T coming back? Because I don't.

I'll be very surprised if he returns. I don't want him to return either.

So who else thinks the Crystal Throne was a deliberate Game of Thrones reference? It's a pretty popular show right now, and despite MASSIVE differences in tone, they are both fantasy shows...

And if they can work in Big Lebowski and Trainspotting references they can surely do Game of Thrones.

No. Unless she can see the future (which... I actually wouldn't put that past her) she would have no reason to believe that situation would come up.

@Blue: I sincerely doubt it was a direct intentional reference.

Also chalk me up again for not expecting Sombra to return.
