^There does have to be, since they're supposed to incorporate elements from all of their subjects.

because from a design standpoint, they're supposed to be an amalgam of all the pony races. If Sea Ponies are a subset of ponies then there should be some aspect of them in the sisters

I see them as distant sub spiesies from other Ponies (who are related to Alicorns).

They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

Well I personally think there should be multiple types of Sea Pony.

Only other equene who should have subspiesies in same way as Ponies are Horses (if they exist in MLPFIM world).

They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

We have no reason to believe that ponies are the dominant life form in this world

For all we know they could only be prevelant in Equestria.

If that's the case, then why SHOULDN'T the other types of equine have sub species?

Having many subspiesies is not equal to being dominant

I prefer Ponies being dominant race in MLPFIM world.

Yeah, but... why? I mean it just seems a tad arbitrary that only ponies should be given sub-races. If that were true they really ought to be categorized as distinct races altogether.

The problem with Sea Ponies is the "pony" part. It would be fine if they were just another species like zebras, but since they're ponies, they should be covered by Celestia as well.

I was confused about that as well; I mean, it isn't like unicorns and pegasi are mythological or anything....

@Applelight: I'm not sure that would work; since Celestia resembles a horse more than any of the other ponies, and she obviously isn't considered remotely ogre-ish.

They could maybe get round that by saying that Hippocampi is their real name, and 'sea pony' is just a nickname that's not techically true.

Yeah, but catfish don't look like they're half cat in the same way that a Hippocampus is half pony.

I don't see any problems with say, Zebras having subtypes.

still, perhaps they were called Sea Ponies because they just so happened to look like ponies.

Doesn't necessarily mean that they're directly related. (other than being equines of course)

I always thought the size and shape were meant to represent the earth pony in them. They're the strongest sub species after all, so that's represented by them having a more powerful looking form

She's "not fully grown" and yes, I think she's slightly larger than them
