I think Spike being a kind of Chick Magnet is to give the show some variety and yes, in a small way it's to appeal to male viewers, since it's one of the goals of this show. I'm sure the same thing would happen if they were all humans and Spike was a cute middle-school rascal in an after-school club full of high school girls.

Not sure if Chick Magnet is the right phrase; it's not quite like they're romantically interested in him; but I do think Spike being old enough to be interested in girls (as evidenced from his crush on Rarity) is part of why he enjoys the attention he gets from them as much as he does. (Hmm... do we have a trope for that?)

Apart from that, I think you put it better than I did. o.o

an Italian diver named Cristina Zenato is balancing a 10ft shark on the palm of her hand, after putting it into a trance by rubbing it's nose.

There HAS to be a Sea Pony capable of doing that. And her name should be Whisper.

I don't know if I'd say Spike is there to appeal to the male demographic. He's more of an Audience Surrogate; his purpose isn't to draw the males in, but to make them more comfortable once they're already watching.

@hidden matt yeah It's very likely he is atleat partially intended as an Escapist Character. He is also universally well liked (in universe)

I wouldn't say he's UNIVERSALLY liked. He is the Butt Monkey after all.

I just love how ridiculously competent he is as her assisstant. He knows his way around the library a thousand times better than she does (although, pretty much EVERYONE seems to know their way around that library better than Twilight

Twilight's reaction would be hilarious. Gummy scared the crap outta her, so what would this do?

EDIT: In my fannon, sea ponies are utterly immune to all sea based vemons and poisons. So playing with box jellies and blue ringed octopi is no biggie.

Edit: If they did put Sea Ponies in the show, prehaps the visitor could be a 'terrestrial biologist'. So both Twi and FS would have common interests. In this case, love of scientific study, and love of animals.

What I meant was that I don't think Twilight would be scared by a shark (or at least not to an excessive degree) She was startled by Gummy because it was completely unexpected, I think she'd anticipate something like a shark if she was going into THE OCEAN!
