I wonder whether pegasi, unicorns, or Earth ponies would have developed Artificial Insemination first if it exists in Equestria. EPs probably know the basics from their farming knowledge pool, while Pegasi have the Clean Rooms from their Weather Factory templates and Unicorns have the precision needed.

Mayhap the discovery was a group effort.

@Pannic: Well, in G1, there are at least 3 ways to conceive foals. There's a Magic Mirror, the Big Brother ponies, and from the UK comics, they once created more baby ponies via magical paintings.

No doubt Magic Mirror babies are initially clones, but they DO diverge and become different from their "parent" as they grow.

@D roy: I imagine so. As far as children in those cases, my headcanon is that m/m pairs have to either adopt or use a surrogate, while for f/f pairs there are spells out there that basically allow them to create a viable egg from the parents' DNA and implant it in one of the parents. Well, if they allow that sort of futzing around with genetics, or that those types of spells actually exist. I tend to not worry about it until it actually comes up.

Well, it's quite doable if you have access to magic and technology. In Vandread the Mejerrans use a modified test tube baby trick to conceive babies which one of the mothers will carry to term, and in the Touhou fandom there's a series of comics where Patchouli uses hair samples to make homunculi babies that have the traits of two parents.

So yeah, homosexuality is nothing unnatural in Equestria, that is my headcanon. Should I ever decide to write a pony shipfic, I am applying this.

I think genderswapping is a little extreme, but it's headcanon material I guess. I think magic that just allows lesbian couples to have children is more likely.

If you're going to assume magic, it's simpler to have them to magical cloning or whatever than magical gender changes.

Or, most likely is either the surrogate or AI ideas for rising a foal from birth, and adoption. Though I see their being far fewer orphans in Equestria due to a combo of pony's not having as big a deal with accedental pregnancies thanks to only conceiving while in heat, so the mare knows when it's safe or not, and a much much much lower number of deadbeat parents.
