@JT The point of the show is "there are plenty of ways to be a girl" which includes things that are "traditionally girly." Otherwise Rarity's character wouldn't exist. Nothing about romance is actually opposed to the show's philosophy, and I'd be more worried about the show sending that message that romance is bad rather than the show encouraging it. The fact that it hasn't straight-up shot down Spike's crush (aside from him getting pretty thoroughly friend-zoned) is a good sign there.
Evening everypony. What's going on?
Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.
Does everyone forget that Batman is an incredibly grim, perpetually serious, extremely unhappy man who has no interest in anything remotely fun?
The 60's
Batman series (and its glorious
Batman: The Movie) and
Batman: The Brave and the Bold disagree with you.
I've always been partial to the idea of Soarin getting interested and asking out Applejack, and having Rainbow deal with her jealousy on the matter. I imagine she'd be stalking them throughout their date getting angrier and thinking up ways to sabotage it (before the inevitable moral less on course).
Earth & Sky
did something similar as a subplot. Rather than RD trying to sabotage their relationship, AJ nearly sabotages it herself because she's very critical of some of Soarin's shortcomings.
MCs on the paper with their murder metaphors need to deal with the literal resurrector.
I'm playing my own version of the drinking game right now. Here are the rules:
- Pour self a rum and coke.
- Take a drink whenever you feel like it.

What about that 'Big Mac's best friend is AJ's secret crush' idea I had?
Tealove is best pony.

Not much of a drinker. Oh sure, I don't mind a cider every now and then but I don't drink on the same level as Pinkie.

I don't want romance in the show either.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
Rarity is very flawed, but still good at heart without being a Jerk with a Heart of Gold archetype. Even though she's far from my favorite, she is an interestingly constructed character.
That reminds me. For a while the image caption on
Jerk with a Heart of Gold was YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE ME!!!. It's a shame they took it down. It fits so much better than the current caption.
