She didn't entrust it though. Fluttershy just took the dang thing.

I can't really remember how the episode unfolded and does that mean Fluttershy stole something belonging to Celestia?

Yeah, that one was Fluttershy's fault for not asking about Philo.

@Roy Fluttershy saw that Philomena looked a little sickly, and she swiped her.

@d Roy

She saw a sick animal in need of care, and couldn't help herself.

She saw the bird was sick, and her "I must help that poor animal!" drive completely overwhelmed her capacity for rational thought.

And that makes things even worse.

  1. She knows a lot about animal.

  2. She has basic common sense about taking care of animals.

  3. Philo is not a creature she knows.

Again, Fluttershy has a lot of common sense regarding animal care. She doesn't lack general common sense either.

She wouldn't have went around trying to take care of a creature she didn't know without the owner's permission. It is unthinkable from someone with her experience.

@Roy: Like we said, Flutters was behaving irrationally and letting her feelings overrule logic.

Speaking of the deer pony, I just watched Bambi for the first time. It's kind of funny that they'd have animation errors even when it was done frame by frame by hand.

It just looked like a sick bird. There was no reason for her to think that it was anything special. And yes, what she did was wrong. That was the whole point of the episode.

@Fluttershy is supercute, but I think she was more worried about the bird than Celestia on even herself

Philo wasn't a known unknown, but an unknown unknown. Fluttershy was unaware of her own ignorance.

I don't consider myself much of a brony. I haven't really contributed anything to the pot— no fanart, no fanfics, don't post in any forums, etc. (My has-fancied-animation-for-a-long-time-and-would-like-to-be-an-animator-himself-one-day older brother is such a brony, but that's another story entirely.) I do, however, have headcanons. All the headcanons. Some of them go rather deep, and some are completely irrelevant but still amusing.

@d Roy

Fluttershy literally didn't know that she was dealing with something foreign to her. That's what Meta's getting at.

[up]Having all the headcanons is one of the best things about this show, IMO. There is just so much to expand on.

The assumption Fluttershy had was that Philomena was very sick. It was clear that Celestia was doing nothing about it. It would be kind of odd to basically go up to the ruler of the country and go "Hey, you're terrible at taking care of your pet, let me do it." *She took Philomena from Celestia because she didn't want to risk anything terrible happening to the bird. Twilight didn't ask Celestia because she worries too much about things and thought Fluttershy would be severely punished for it. And judging by the phoenixes in Dragon Quest, the species is out of the way from most of pony culture, so it makes sense they wouldn't know much about them.
