Oh. My bad, then — I had not seen the tumblr. Sorry.

I thought that it was a tongue-in-cheek, purposefully overblown reaction...

She also got drunk shortly thereafter and held a drunk livestream. I didn't watch it, but she said that she hardly ever gets drunk. I guess for her, this was a situation worth doing it.

Now the whole Derpy drama is just making me sad. I still don't get why so many people had to get so offended by that one scene, I mean seriously....

Though what you guys just said about the actress for the save derpy video also kinda disturbs me and saddens me at the same time. It's a shame too, cause I actully like her Derpy voice.

*thread hop*

Can somebody please summarise what's the drama is about? People do not like the fact that Derpy ascended to a slightly less-extra?

Mostly, they did not like the fact that her voice and behaviour made her seem somewhat brain-damaged. They felt this to be ableist, and in general mean-spirited.*

So in the itunes download, they changed her voices, fixed her eyes, and removed the part in which Dash called her "Derpy".

As an aside: not being a native speaker, I had actually never heard the terms "derp" or "derpy" before — which connotations do they carry? Are they offensive, in themselves?

As far as I understand (also not native), herp-derp is an Unsound Effect for stupid. Or look there

I don't blame her for getting upset over it. Mentally disabled characters get just about no respectful media coverage, so she was really happy to see how Derpy was portrayed...

I was honestly touched by BDR's video. Granted, I'd have had a lot less sympathy for her if she were just complaining about a character she liked not being given the treatment she thought they deserved, but for her, like many other bronies, the MLP fandom has offered her a chance at having the close, supporting group of friends that a lot of people in her position can have a very difficult time finding irl. While I don't personally think it's wise to get terribly attached to a cartoon character, I don't really see how that's any less stupid or pathetic than being attached to anything else in existence.

I'm not judging her. She recently had to give up some pets because her landlord was an asshole, and had some other real-life bullshit happen, so I can understand that she's emotionally fragile. I myself have cried about something way more "pathetic".

However, I think that she's feeling these ills that fall on Derpy a bit too deeply. Like something deeply personal is happening to her, instead of a character that she unofficially plays part-time.

All of this is strictly not our business, though. I was trying to let the discussion die because of that, but I'm posting this because I want to make it clear I'm not pointing and mocking her.

[up][up]Come to think of it, I suppose that's one way of looking at it.

Yeah, it's my fault for giving these tidbits from her tumblr one at a time. Giving them at all makes me feel like such a gossip-hound, that I try to minimalise them. And that just ends up giving you guys an incorrect image of it all.

Yeah, that's a lot more understandable. Real-life emotion can bleed into other stuff really easily. If other crap has been happening to her, I can see how the Derpy thing might have just pushed her over the edge.

I have an idea. How about we change the topic now? Is there anything any of you want to talk about regarding ponies? Cause I'm kinda stumped, but I really want to change the topic.

There's that, and having a character she relates to so closely deemed "offensive" may have been a bit of a last straw for someone who, by appearances, has been deemed similar things by society for a significant portion of her life.

Now, I'm not saying we need to baby her or jump to her defense over the whole thing, obviously she's a grown woman and can fend for herself. I'm merely saying that, as someone who has been through something similar, I don't think her reaction is all that ridiculous when seen in the right light, and I find it saddening that a lot of the same people who unashamedly watch a cartoon directed at young girls, no matter what society says about them for doing so, would call someone "pathetic" for having a cartoon character mean something to her.

Edit: Oh, sorry.
