If you guys seriously think this is gonna stop M/M shipping in the fandom, then you really have no clue how shippers work.

I think "Foalhood" could be used in place of "Colthood" or "Fillyhood".

The unicorn’s thought were interrupted when he stumbled over something that was lightly covered in the snow that covered the ground. “Strange…” He levitated the offending object with his horn and shook it off, revealing a teal equine doll wearing a wizard’s hat adorned with lightning bolts. His eyes widened and memories of his foalhood came flooding back as he recognized the doll he was holding in the air: Archmage Thunderbolt: High Mage of Ramwart’s School of Magic and Sorcery.

It's kind of difficult to work a backstory for Equestria.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle would be the Princesses. Nopony knows anything about their history before Discord's reign, and since the story I'm writing takes place before that time, fitting them into the equation is challenging.

How far back are we talking here? If the Princesses were very young, you could write whatever you wanted.

I'd imagine Discord being the
Rasputin of Equestria, except he actually succeeds (for a while, at least). The Princesses go into exile until they "find" the Elements of Harmony. *shrug*

About 300 years after the founding of Equestria, in a period I call the First Age of Equestria, which lasted from the founding to the Nightmare War (in my timeline).
@Deathbunny: Oh yes, I forgot! They can always find a way to work around complications, such as the shipped characters having an affair or, in the most extreme cases, using wibbly-wobbley timey-wimey stuff.

One idea I had for the origins of The Princesses (and Alicorns in general) is that they were somehow derived from Unicorns.
