OK, so it might make sense that the first attempt didn't work, so Discord got overly smug.

But theres still these damn differences:

Rainbow Dash was there. That should have set make him wonder why the Betrayer had returned.
The ponies had regained color, and as Spike pointed out, these aren't just visual cues to viewers and not invisible to characters.
Instead of the ponies being all "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!" with each other, they were determined instead.

Anyhow, clever use of all those season 1 friendship reports as ChekhovsGuns. Did not expect them to turn up like that.
