Discord, the greatest troll since Trollestia.
I took a guess and cut a portion out of my heart.

I don't know, The fact that Discord was put in the garden while her own sister was shot sent to the moon has to add up for something.

Thats kind of odd. It goes to show that, despite Discord seems much more competent a villain than Nightmare, Celestia didn't consider him as big a treath.

Yes, Discord was cased in stone. Still, Celestia decided to keep that on Equestria instead off launching him out of the orbit or whatever.

Nightmare was locked inside the moon. And she teleported out of there in the blink of an eye once the time was right.

Geez Celestia, you just love putting an expiration date on your imprisonment spells, huh?

Well, the fanon explanation for Nightmare Moon's imprisonment having an expiration date seems to be that it was intended to be so — that Celestia was planning to eventually redeem Luna somehow.

As for Discord, if I remember correctly, the new episode said that the spell failed because Celestia and Luna no longer control the Elements of Harmony, the mane cast does. It kind of made sense to keep the statue close by, actually, I think — if you launch a petrified demigod in orbit, you can be basically 100% sure that it will eventually fall in the hands of someone who can release him. Much better to keep it where you can see it.

However, what surprises me is that Celestia did not take care of the issue beforehand: she seemed to be aware of much about the nature of Discord and the reason for his release, after all...
But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

Oh right, that makes sense, the whole elements of harmony and stuff. I forgot for a moment.

And I guess Celestia just has great faith in the Mane 6. And she was sure she could keep the elements safe in her own palace. I doubt a library, a bakery, a cottage, a textile shop, a cloud house and a farm has the same amount of security as a palace.

However, said faith in her little group of Power Ponies and her own spells lead to the elements being stolen.

What I wonder about is what Luna is going to do. She is established as being near-Celestia when it comes to raw power, after all, and that would be an occasion to redeem herself after the whole Nightmare Moon incident...
But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

If Luna's going to show up, we really should have seen her in the first episode.

Eh, who knows. Perhaps she is pulling some sort of gambit behind the scenes, much as Celestia did in the pilot of the first season.

Also, as things stand now the Mane 6 have basically lost already — they have no clue on where to find the Elements, and all of them except for Twilight have lost their Element altogether. Plus, Dash is AWOL. The only potential major player who did not do anything so far is Luna, and Celestia said that Discord was originally imprisoned through the actions of both Celestia and Luna, so...

Lots of fans like to speculate that Luna's absence is due to her not still forgiving herself of becoming Nightmare and becoming reclusive.

... Despite her being warmly greeted and her joining the festivites in part 2 of the pilot.

EDIT: slow poast is slow.

[up]So you're saying Luna and Celestia might have been using the mane 6 as a distrsction to keep Discord busy while they work behind the scenes? Sneaky ponies... And hooves are hard to be sneaky with!

You might be a brnoy when Pinkie pie fan art reminds you of your friends and if that fan art is Rule34 that's the least of you're problems.

Why everypony asuming that Celestria knewed were Discord statue was?
Because he know I'm going to go out in this plane and I'm going to remove one of His creations from His universe.

Another question is why Discord did not attack Twilight directly after Dash fled. Her magical power, strong though it may be, is probably no match for someone who was capable of going toe to toe (hoof to hoof?) with two demigoddesses, and it's not like she can use the Elements now...

Well, before Discord stole the only weapon that could defeat him and taunted their bearers into entering an obvious trap* , getting them separated and defeating them one at a time: not a bad tactic, all things considered.

Ooh, this reminds me of another Epileptic Tree of mine: Discord did not, and could not, steal the Elements. He just turned them invisible as soon as Celestia opened the box, and used this to trick their bearers into the labyrinth.

Also, most of Twilight's power is in her friends. Both times she went white-eyed was because of them. Friendship is magic, after all. He might not be able to take on Twilight head-on, so he takes out the support system.

Friendship is Magic. I like it.

Actually, does that have any canon/fanon support? Friendship actually being magic? Because it would be kind of sweet if that was an actual thing.

The Elements of Harmony are the most powerful force on Equestria* , and they're powered by friendship.

Yes, there is a canon confirmation on friendship being magic.

What did you think the Orbital Friendship Cannon ran on? Tears of newborns?

Well, I seem to remember a certain Black Mage having an immensely destructive spell which was powered by love — as in, every use of it permanently consumed some of the love existing in the universe.

It would make sense for an Orbital Friendship Cannon to do the same thing with respect to tears of newborns tongue
