I like how they twist common stuff like that. Though if this was the 80's MLP, Twilight would have had to wait until the episode climax to pull that spell off, for no real reason as she would have been just as capable to use it from the start.

Also, Discord didn't waste time or his own nerves when up against the Incorruptible Pure Pureness of a certain pony. That scene shows that he could have just brainwashed all of them right on the spot, but wheres the fun in that? He was clearly dissatisfied of not being able to trick Fluttershy.

Take most other cartoon villains, and they'd be trying half an episode to trick just one character and never having a Plan B that works. Discord seems to know his stuff.

Also: "Oh but I am weak and helpless" says the one who scares dragons near to tears by giving them a Death Glare.

Technically speaking, Discord was crowned as "Ruler" before Celestia and Luna did anything, so even if he's doing this for fun now, most likely he's planning for bigger things later on.

She betrays her son to the Joker to keep from having her medical supply thefts exposed, and the Joker savagely beats Jason with a crowbar. The Joker locks Jason and his mother in the warehouse where the assault took place and blows it up just as Batman arrives.

In "Emperor Joker", a multi-part story throughout the Superman titles, the Joker steals Mister Mxyzptlk's reality-altering power, remaking the entire world into a twisted caricature, with everyone in it stuck in a loop. The Joker entertains himself with various forms of murder, such as killing Lex Luthor over and over and devouring the entire population of China.

Effects

Lethal version

Similar in effect to strychnine poisoning, contact with Joker venom attacks the body's nervous system and causes uncontrollable spasms of laughter, followed by a slow, painful death. Some have speculated that the venom hyperstimulates the laughter functions of the brain, leaving the victim unable to breathe; others speculate that the toxin's neurological effects cause the electrical impulses controlling the heart to go haywire, causing Tachycardia, followed by cardiac arrest and eventual death.

Non-lethal version

The non-lethal variant of Joker venom causes uncontrollable laughter, but instead of dying, their faces are usually pulled into an unusually large grin and they are placed in a temporary coma. Artists often stylize the effects, adding yellowed teeth, bulging eyes, etc. similar to the features of the Joker himself. Some versions of the Joker use this type of Joker venom almost exclusively, either for practical reasons or because that universe is intended for a younger audience (as in the case of the DC Animated Universe).

Prolonged exposure even to non-fatal Joker venom is highly dangerous, as it can cause permanent brain damage, leading to severe and permanent mental illness with delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and mania.

Celestia already told everyone: under Discord's rule, everypony was miserable. While Discord himself was probobly having a ball, a blast, loads of fun and a funny blasting ball.

And I think it's been discussed before, but when you look at the inital stages of the two biggest antagonists plans, Nightmare Moon and Discord, they seem like pretty hramless villains. Eternal night? Big deal, who's that gonna hurt? Except the whole goddman eco system and all things that rely on sunlight, like all plant life, the food source of the 90% vegetarian Equestria.

Discord messing around with chaotic weather and just messing shit up that makes no sense whatsoever? Eh, it problby causes minor annoyances and a few laughs in the likes of Pinkie, right? Except he clearly takes great joy in making others feel miserable, and get's annoyed when he fails to do so.
