An empire rules over a variety of ethnic or cultural regions, as opposed to a kingdom which just rules a single area.

That should be common knowledge, really. Everyone knows kingdoms are evil, evil things ruled by evil monarchs, except when they're ruled by an evil queen who overthrew the old king, which they usually are.

Emerald Ray's also the only stallion who's known to be in the toy line but not known to be in the show.

As for the Crystal Ponies in general, them being worked into season 3 makes a lot of sense—out of all the big toy line things that wasn't in season 1 or 2, they're the biggest: 22 to 34 mini-figures and potentially five or more brushables, plus two (originally planned to be four) keychains.
