About Twilight's Song: Since she started singing about what sort of magic she'd learned it seemed pretty clear to me that it was some kind of magic test.
Maybe it's the test go become a full fledged Court Magician or whatever you would call such a thing in Equestria? I hope so, if only because that would mean that the show might actually explore the characters achieving their goals, and I can hold out hope that Rainbow will join the Wonderbolts in canon.
Anyway, I got the feeling that the test was actually something legitimately important, so I don't think this is a retread of Lesson Zero. The episode just seemed very dramatic compared to usual.

The song actually was pretty short. It seemed to be one of those accentuating songs as opposed to THE SONG.
Also this was stated to be part of the Season Opener. So HYPE.

Season Opener, eh? I thought there was a good chance it would be a 3rd episode, like Lesson Zero, used to make some change in the overall show's template (no more Friendship Letters, perhaps.
I wonder if they're going to stick to format and open with a 2 part episode with a powerful villain?

Well, if it's a 2 part to start with then the animation will always look a bit better. The first 2 episodes of season 2 had some really lively animation, then it was a bit more standard for the rest of the season. I hope we get more hair animation though.

Generally every animated show undergoes some manner of Art Evolution between seasons, so I expect we'll see some here. Maybe one thing they've decided to focus on was better hair animation in general.

@Steve: That whole you'll go blind thing doesn't work anyway, the pressurized cappilaries run inside the eyeball, not amongst the optical nerves. Worst-case you get a nice case of pinkeye and freak people out.

@Comic con poster: Some of those are really cute. I like the doughnut one and the filly in front. But that pony in back has way too much going on. There are like four separate colors in the eyes alone.
