I like to think that she did it to herself, and whatever dart arts her jealousy drove her to invoke to gain power removed her remorse and/or empathy for those she was harming. When the Elements purged her of those powers, the gravity of what she did finally dawned on her.

Lauren Faust herself said that their was some outside force that was at least partially involved in turning Luna into Nightmare Moon. Maybe something/someone who specializes in magic and/or manipulation, perhaps?

And then JT summed up how I feel about the whole thing.

@stevebat Is he an attention whore? Or just lonely? My Maltese-Silky puppy Scollie (well, he's 9 years old but he looks like a god damn puppy) is very much an attention seeker who thinks he owns the place. He's also an escape artist we need to keep on a really long rope so he doesn't run out on the road.

Wasn't that in regard to statements that she made after she left the show, though? Did she make the remark about NMM before or after she left?

But yeah, it's honestly subject to change, and what we do know is very much up to interpretation.

@ed Yeah, but as the older sister, she's always been in power, so she's never needed to access it.

I do like the idea that, before they defeated Discord, he tempted both the sisters to rule beside him, and while she turned him down, Luna was intrigued by the idea.

Side note: One time I read a fanfic about Wheatley and the other cores from Portal 2 encountering NMM/Luna on the moon. Through magical shenanigans, they get sucked into her mind when she returns to Equestria, and Luna makes use of them to stop NMM from the inside.

Keep in mind that at Brony Con she said it's not really canon until it appears on the show proper. So anything said on her Deviantart or other outside channels should be taken with a grain of salt.

And I'm also of the school of thought that some outside force came in an amplified the jealousy that already existed in Luna's heart, causing her to take the most extreme route.

@Absol Well, given Fluttershy's use of "nopony gives a flying feather, " it would appear to be the Equestrian (or at least pegasus) equivalent of the Precision F-Strike.
