I've also never played Mario, have only watched a single Dr Who episode, and there was some other pop thing that I've never indulged in I can't remember.

There I said that as well.

EDIT: Darn we had a chain too. And no page topper 4 u >o

I can't speak for the others, but Illusion of Gaia, while nice and fun, just didn't have the same...goodness as Link To The Past. Maybe Link didn't have any elements that were that innovative, but there's something about the way it was put together that just works. It feels complete like most other games don't.

Hey I still have VHS tapes filled with nothing but The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Captain N: The Game Master. Liking Captain Planet is nothing to be ashamed of.

I think I enjoyed Phantom Menace when I was a kid. But I think that's because the movie aimed at 6 year olds or whatever I was. Though I still think I liked the original trilogy back then.

I kept getting confused because I thought Luke was Anakin evil grin

@CDRW: Team Miyamoto puts a lot of love into making the land of Hyrule fit together in a believable way. It helps that Link's cave explorations are fuelled by his childhood spelunking memories.

I always viewed Zelda, Mario, and similar Nintendo franchises as sort of the "comfort food" of video games. Not particularly complex or innovative, but very familiar and widely loved because of that.

There's just something about Nintendo. I don't think I've ever NOT enjoyed one of their games, if given the opportunity to play one. (Except Zelda, apparently)

@Ace: Man, what must have happened in those caves? tongue

I always thought of it that apart from the familiarity of the themes and the story of Zelda and her Link with his Sword that Defeats Evil, in general the Zelda games are polished and put together in a way that feels more holistic than many other games.

@Ed: I always think back to an interview Miyamoto gave in the early 90's in Reader's Digest, where he talked about how he loved to explore the rural countrysides where he grew up. Once he found a cave, and inside he discovered a concealed entrance to another cave. Memories like this fuelled the way he hid secrets in his worlds for explorative players to uncover.

Both of those are on DVD now.

I actively collect old cartoons. From 1980 to 1995 is the golden age of western animation as far as I'm concerned.

@CDRW: I've beaten Battletoads.

No Bullshit. However, I will admit I'm playing the Sega Genesis version, which reportedly had the difficulty turned down somewhat.

I grew up on the 6th gen consoles, so my childhood is Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Star Fox Adventures, Pokémon Colosseum, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle…

Then some earlier games from when I was in daycare and they had an N64, Genesis, or whatever.
