I like to keep things organized. To the best of my knowledge this is how the story goes.
Original continuity: The Ponies live in Dream Valley. First came ''The Movie'' followd by two television specials, Rescue at Midnight Castle, with Tirek as the villain and Escape from Catrina, with Catrina being the main villain. The T.V. series followed afterwards.
Little Pony Tales: Set in Ponyville. Features ponies living like humans and ocasionaly walking on two legs. Contains 26 episodes.
The films: A series of eight films from 2005 to 2009.
Friendship Is Magic: Takes place in Equestria. May or may not contain elements of the Magical Girl genre.

About older series , that first one. People say it had quite cool bad guys but what about good guys, ponies. Does protagonist of first MLP where cool or lame?
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.
I heard that characters from the past generations were either too shallow or didn't have characterization at all and were threw inside the show as an excuse to make the target audience buy the complete sets of toys.

I heard that to, but I never saw any think (and rather don't whant to see).
Only thing what I saw from first series was Nostalgia Chick review where both heores and villians wheren't impresive, horever I don't much trust Chick on this one because Caustic Critics lies in most of revievs (or use From Centrain Point Of View)

The first series was pretty dull, from what I saw.

I saw G1 as a kid, and I can confirm it's true: the main characters were often interchangeable and had little in the way of characterization. I mean, I can remember who's who on the Care Bears, but I have a hard time trying to remember any of the G1 ponies. This was actually, dare I say it, one place where Tales had the advantage.
The villains were pretty memorable, though. And they had a lot of them.
Well ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry?

Well if it is true it is a problem. You shallow protagonist is wort thing for show and even with best villains it can not be good as show with well developed charaters.
And everybody agree that MLPFIM have great cast. (And villains or antaginist are pretty great to).

The musical? You mean that "best tea party ever" thing? Someone posted that on Ponychan.
I... I couldn't take it. I freaking love musicals, but I couldn't take it. I couldn't sit through more than three minutes of the thing.

I've watched and reviewed the G1 show episode-by-episode. And honestly? By the standards of the 1980s, it's a decent cartoon. Maybe not the best, but in the upper tier - I would rank it not far from G1 Transformers, honestly.
Yes, characterization wasn't too deep (though calling the characters interchangeable is an exaggeration - Wind Whistler was quite different from Surprise), but what shows at the time had deep characterization? MLP provided a rich fantasy world, adventure, and relatively hardcore villains.

This is off track sort of, but now that we've seen what the new millennium can do for MLP what other shows are you hoping for? Myself, I'd LOVE to see a redo of Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders.

You know, for once, I'm actually excited to see a CMC episode. Granted, it's less a CMC episode and more a bunch of flashbacks, but... yeah.
It is airing this week, right?
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

I believe so.
I have to say, I'll expect using the CMC as a perspective to examine the mane cast to be a lot less frustrating than having episodes focused on them to the exclusion of the more interesting characters.

yup, that's this week. Then next week twilight meets an owl and spike get's jelaous, the week after Pinkie is lonely, and then...THE END OF SEASON 1!
Honestly, I couldn't really say which shows I might like to see rebooted. I mean, I obviously can't speak for the 80's shows, being born in the 90's, but even amongst 90's shows I remember them being good enough that I wouldn't really want them remade. I guess that's Nostalgia Goggles talking. It's not like I would have had any semblance of taste when I was a kid, after all.
Thundercats is coming back. Almost every other 80's cartoon has already gotten a reboot already. Transformers, G.I. Joe, Care Bears, He-Man, Ninja Turtles and now My Little Pony. About the only things I can think of that haven't had a reboot are The Smurfs, Teddy Ruxpin, a few Rankin-Bass shows like Silverhawks, and Rainbow Brite. The only reason I've even heard of Rainbow Brite is because of Robot Chicken.

I understand it's G3 and G3.5 that get the most scorn, when it comes to MLP.
