Discord really didn't feel much like a hostile villain in part 2. In part 1 he was manipulative, malicious, and all that good stuff.

In part 2 he just seemed to be having a laugh

I could've sworn that at some point in the episode Discord put his pinky (or the equivalent of it) up near his mouth like Doctor Evil.

He did, after Twilight uses that bubble to free them from Discord's grip

It's interesting how nitpicky people can get after they have had a few hours to digest an episode (myself included).

I guess some final thoughts from me. I actually liked the second half of the episode more then the first half, but I can see why most people would react the opposite. It seems that that Discord got hit with the idiot ball at the very end, but I always felt that he came across as a bit to powerful so that kind of ending almost felt inevitable to me.

And I guess ultimately this episode will stand as a point in favor of the "slice of life only" portion of the fandom. While the episode certainly isn't the worst by any means, it does demonstrate how the show at this point really can't handle these kinds of adventure without coming across awkward in some fashion (it certainly doesn't help that most of the writers don't seem to have all that much experience with these kinds of plots before this show).

These two episodes were entertaining, in my opinion, but they are an indication that the show is in its natural habitat with the Slice of Life format.

I think FIM does well with some variety, but I can see why others would want it to stick to what it does best.

There is some consolation in that we're likely to stay with episodic slice-of-life comedy for the rest of the season, if the first one is any indication.

I wonder what they'll do with Luna, though. She's supposed to show up in this new season, but if not in the epic adventure episodes, then where/how?

@Mio If it means being able to see awesome villains like Discord, then I'd be able to put up with this kind of episode every now and then. It provides a different change of pace from the other episodes too, and it stops things from being repetitive.

but yes, I wouldn't want the adventuring to overshadow the slice of life. However, I don't want the adventuring to dissapear completely either.

The writers can only get better at this as they go along

That's assuming they write this all the time, not just one two-parter every couple months.

Even if that's the case, they'll still get used to writing in this style after a while.

@Awe: They didn't turn completely gray until they got to Twilight's house. They were just sort of washed out before then. Maybe the first level wasn't noticeable, and by the time they went totally gray it was too late.
