But you people are rather missing the point. I don't care how "dangerous" he is. Since when is "danger" a valid measure of quality in My Little Pony anyway? I'm okay with dude being an illusionist trickster, but that they canonically made him some sort of god is gonna be a craw in my side unless a huge retcon happens.

Why I think PP could easly beat him or her?

I was responding to Sorting Algorithm of Evil being brought up and also we could probably justify it with Pikie's Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?

A trope that, as its own description states, applies to Action Series and Video Games. MLP is neither, nor does every episode revolve around "fighting evil" so there's no reason to expect the ponies are constantly getting better at it. I'd also question the Trope's usefulness—going by it, every episode of Walker, Texas Ranger has to introduce a new and more powerful adversary. It by and large doesn't, but that didn't stop it from having seven years of solid plots.

Besides, what I'm arguing is that the Sorting Algorithm was... mis-sorted, or whatever the right term would be. Discord should be on a lower tier than Nightmare Moon. Yes, he appeared substantially later in the series than NMM did, but so did the Diamond Dogs.

@Moe Dantes: The reason I think Discord is a better villain than NM is because he actually, you know, accomplished something. After NM kidnaps Celestia, nothing she does ends up working. The ponies end up overcoming her obstacles pretty much every time she comes up with one.

The other thing is that from a character perspective, I think Discord is a lot more interesting because he actually knows the ponies well enough to manipulate their strengths and turn them against them. NM just chucked random stuff at them, and it failed at every turn. It's not necessarily that the "danger" quotient of the show needs to be increased, but if you're going to have a villain, you might as well have one who's actually capable of accomplishing something before the cast takes him out. (Also, see this, where I dramatically over-analyze pretty much everything about the episode.)

I get that you don't like Discord, that's fine. But he's not an objectively worse character because you happen to not like the effect he has on the story.

Which is part of why I think Discord is more effective; he chose obstacles that went against their elements rather than stuff they were strong against. I get that NM's obstacles were meant to demonstrate the elements, but the result was that she seemed a bit ineffective.

There is popular theory about Luna fighting inside NM and this is a reason why she set that kind of traps.

to be fair to Nightmare Moon, the obstacles she threw at the mane cast weren't exactly bad, so much as she chose the wrong group of ponies to use them on.

I like to think that she was intentionally trying to get them to Synchronize with the elements. Maybe that's the only way they could become tangible enough to destroy. She just wasn't counting on Twilight figuring out how the final element worked

Fourth season will have evil Celestria (in NM style). Well s3 to, because she would become evil before clifhander, and after that revelation Twilight will fire Element of Harmony.
