@ Sereg: Maybe if they praised the different aspects of Mare do Well but they didn't. They only praised the parts they did. It's not the worst example of hypocrisy but it still kinda is.

Actually, I think that the Flim Flam brothers would be easy to redeem. They were just ruthless business men. If shown the error of their ways, it could take.

I think it's the case of trying to make the Straight Man character act as a voice of reason but still be kind of humorous and human about it, ie. have a point but still be kind of flawed. The problem is some times they may go too far and act just as bad as the jerk character.

Applejack seems to have a problem with this balance, she's either the generic pony that doesn't really do much except be normal and polite or she's so aggressive and self righteous it ruins her entire point, granted most of the time, this is actually pointed out in show (eg. Fall Weather Friends) rather than making her a Designated Hero. This maybe why I find her a bit boring outside her spotlight episodes.

Twilight is a good example of a proper balance, she can be a Straight Man but her neurosis and sarcasm make her humorous and eccentric about it without making look as bad as the 'jerk' pony.

I think my problem was more they switched straight to humiliating RD rather than just try reasoning with her first and maintained a rather smug disposition about it throughout. Like said before it's a problem of finding a balance between a funny Straight Man and smug Designated Hero.

This is maybe why I like Twilight in Mmm Mystery. Her exasperation towards Pinkie was warranted and after a long time of trying to explain things clearly to her. I get the feeling some may have liked it for the matter that Twilight's logic triumphed over Pinkie for once.

I think if they'd included a scene where the mane cast tried to reason with Dash and failed, then no one would've complained.

@ginger: That one extra scene likely would have fixed a lot of the episode's problems, though I admit it may have made RD look even more like a total jerk.

I did have this idea for the ending instead having the others get overconfident about Mare Do Well and screw up in a feat only RD has the experience with. This would lead RD to redeem herself by (resentfully) saving MDW. The others will admit they took things too far while RD will admit to her ego problem. Nice balance.

@ginger, Re spicy foods: Well, there's the addiction thing as Ils mentioned. Plus as I said, if you start at a low enough scale (Like, I don't know, a bit of cayan pepper or tabasco) then the burning isn't ll that bad compared to the taste, which I do genuinely like. In mine case, though, there's at least a mild element of the fact that I was 10, and I wanted to be more like my Dad. After a while it was something I just got used to. and I still liked the taste, so it just kinda happened that I became used to them.
