I thought the hedge maze was just a way to get the mane 6 out of the way and pacify them, so they couldn't ruin his fun

I thought it was just to waste their time (and lure them into the traps).

I stand by my theory that the maze thing was solely (or mostly) for his own amusement. I mean, he's demonstrated that he can basically depower all of them at will. Well, also to break up their friendship so that they can't use the elements against him.

I can actually completely see Discord giving up when they solve the riddle - but not going back to stone. Either running off somewhere to come up with a new 'game', or actually learning a lesson. Can you imagine, if this whole thing turned into a aesop about learning to play nice with others? I think that would be kind of awesome, really. And fit perfectly with the show.

Yeah, actually. Calling it right now: Discord genuinely has no idea that ponies are afraid of him, he's just too busy having a good time to notice. He can still seem sort of threatening, but only to the mane six - he only 'plays' with them, because they can handle his 'games' from then on. Turn down the malice, make it never truly life threatening, just sort of annoying for the mane six.

I don't know; the way Celestia treats him should really make it obvious that she considers him a serious problem. And Discord is too smart to be ignorant of Celestia's view of him.

I don't see him giving up so much as "Yay you won this round! I'll come back when I think of a new game!" without really learning anything.

He's definitely malicious. "You've had enough of being kind! Now it's time to be cruel." Not to mention his sugary mind-rape of Pinkie Pie; rewatch that scene, then tell me there's no malice behind it.

I dunno, I just get more a vibe of dicking around from Discord rather than actual malice. Like, he's a troll. But a troll doesn't necessarily want to watch someone suffer, they just find certain reactions funny.

I think anytime he's swooping around them (especially with RD) he sounds threatening and malicious. He's definitely evil. No harmless trickster here

As much as I liked the idea the Discord used the Elements of Harmony to power up his magic, since it leaves an obvious avenue for depowering him, I'm starting to wonder if the whole thing was a bluff: The Elements sneaked out of the box all on their own, and Discord doesn't actually know where they are. Not that I'd want to see the same journey all over again, but doesn't it seem odd that the Elements of Harmony could sit undisturbed in an abandoned castle for a thousand years, yet get stolen after about one year in the monarch's locked vault? (Plus I doubt that they would be of any help to someone who's made out to be the whole antithesis of harmony, anyway.)

He took them because they're the only things that could threaten him.

I like to think that it was the mane cast who made the elements tangible again. Before that, no one could touch them or wield them. Afterwards they became something that needed to be protected.

That and Discord is pretty much the only being capable of breaking into Celestia's vault I think. I reckon they were pretty darn safe in there until he was let loose

I'll bet the Elements are in the box, but concealed by illusions. He actually couldn't get into the door, but he was able to cast a subtle spell on the contents when the box was taken out. Remember his riddle? "Find the Elements where you began".

And where did they begin? Ah, yes...

Discord is a troll, but that means 1. He's aware of how much misery he's causing 2. he does it anyway 3. he makes others miserable for his own enjoyment.

I agree, he's a real Love to Hate villain. He's enormously entertaining, but I would not want to ever meet him.

Celestia tipped the box over though. You'd think they'd have fallen out
