The way I see it, The Mane cast actually vary in age a decent bit, but the exact amount is hard to pin down. The best I can figure, though, is that AJ is probably the oldest, and Twilight is probably the youngest. AJ was explicitly a late bloomer with her cutie mark, and Twilight hadn't even entered Magic Kindergarten yet, and they received their cutie marks on the same day. Pinkie Pie could possibly be younger than Twilight, but she was (presumably) doing farm work at that age, and she is only a year younger than Fluttershy, who looked like she had been held back a year or two in Flight School considering her awkward build and lack of skill. In fact, I'd say that Fluttershy could be older than AJ based on that alone, but more evidence points to AJ.

@Steve I would assume that only a private school for unicorns like that would have a kindergarten class specifically about magic. Not to mention the fact that Twilight was under the impression that Celestia could send her back there, implying that it was the lowest level of her schooling there.

She was clearly panicing and exaggerating. It's not even clear if Magic Kindergarden actually exists. Anyway, the impression I got is that the school for gifted unicorns was at a much higher level. Remember that Twilight was already casually reading thick books before even taking the exam.

@Perpetual: Wouldn't the idea of being booted from Celestia's school altogether be even worse? My guess is that (in Canterlot at least, since there are so many unicorns) there's some sort of standard magic curriculum to teach the unicorns the basics. Twilight probably just went to school someplace else before ending up at Celestia's school.

@Story Twilight is also, well, Twilight, so her reading large books isn't exactly strange. I doubt she would just make up Magic Kindergarten, either. She hadn't really snapped yet when it was first brought up, and was more or less sane by the end of the episode when she said goodbye to her friends, expecting to be sent back there.
